Is the season a lost cause
I was so looking forward to this season. After the ridiculous way the team lost to Winnipeg last April I really thought they would respond in a positive way this year. The way the team played the last couple of months in the season and in most of that series it really gave me hope we would have something this year.
And now.....it's like watching the Cleveland Browns for the last 27 years. I don't ever remember a stretch (well I do, the mid 00's era) that has just been so awful, so unwatchable, so unexciting to see. And it's not just one part of the game. It's offense, defense, goaltending, special teams, coaching, managing. There is nothing that has gone right. There have been two winning streaks of two games. That's it. We are tied with Columbus for the fewest wins. It's just been a gross display.
I don't see the 12 game win streak with this group. I don't see 2019 with this group. I'm just about ready to start rooting for the Blues to take on the identity of a late season NBA team that just openly and obviously tanks for a better pick. This all just blows.

Lost cause for just this 1 season?
IMO, there is NO HOPE for anything better for multiple years. The trajectory of our young players does not equal our aging ones, or the ones that departed in the last 2 years.
Army did not replenish this roster to achieve greatness. He replenished it for achieve cash register rings. With the rise in CAP, Army's well went dry beginning this year.
I saw it coming---clear as a bell.
We are in a very deep hole, Sports Fans.
Thank Army.

Re: Is the season a lost cause
We saw last season that the core group can play good hockey when they are all sufficiently self-motivated and committed to pulling together. This season started with a big thud at home followed by a road recovery followed by the Hofer meltdown. Followed by the Mailloux circus and numerous other defensive lapses, by the Thomas injury, by the Neighbours injury, leading into the current injuries to Snuggerud, Walker, and Toropchenko. Throughout the veteran leadership has been mired in the depths of a dysfunctional offensive funk. They brought up the young #10 overall successor center who promptly joined the veterans in their offensive face-plant. No help, hope shattered. Last night we saw Kyrou and Parayko make eggegious rookie mistakes leading directly to goals. Thomas was wholly ineffective. It's been a shirt-show and it is snowballing.
Trades are needed, they need to shake up the locker room, practice dynamic, and lineup. Declining veterans need to be moved. The return needs to include younger NHL ready players, not just low first round draft picks, and not B-grade roster filler. If teams want to pluck Blues vets for a deep run they need to fork over top prospects in return. The Blues have all their future 1st round picks, they need players not more picks. If it takes a vet plus a pick to land a key prospect they should seriously consider that type of trade. They need a #1 center, a prospect projecting to top pairing D. They need to be bold.

No its not a lost cause because the Blues are moving toward younger players in Broberg, Holloway, Hofer, Neighbours, Mailloux, Kessel, Dvorsky, Kaskimaki, Snuggerud and this season these players are getting substantial NHL experience. But yes everything else sucks

Re: Is the season a lost cause
So wait...it is??? That means I can't watch games any more? I can't wear my Blues gear and cheer for my favorite Team? I can't go nuts while I celebrate goals? I can't get my 3 year old son excited about watching with me and pretending to be our favorite players while we bat a rolled up pair of socks across the floor with our plastic sticks???
It's a TOTAL lost cause???

We need quality, not quantity.
I was all for tearing it down after Tarasenko and O'Reilly, hoping to collect lottery picks to rebuild around (along with Thomas and Kyrou, who I was still on the fence about, and maybe Binner and Parayko - who just have unique value that may not be recouped in trade). The bold offer sheets plus 12 game win streak convinced me that there was an alternative to a scorched earth rebuild, and that they could reload with guys like Fowler and Suter and remain competitive.
But there is something rotten at this core that, absent a streak here or there, has consistently folded over the last several coaches. Our goaltending isn't even league average, and we've seen how this team doesn't compete when the goaltending is suspect. This isn't new.
We need a future #1C, a future #1D, and a future franchise goalie. Acquiring and developing those pieces should be the mandate, wins and losses be damned. Those guys are unlikely to be found among our current prospect pool.
The season is not a lost cause so long as we're making progress towards building that new core - leaders in those three positions who will make players around them better, who have the ability and drive to outplay their counterparts on the other team.
Re: Is the season a lost cause
We've already suffered through a third of a season with a bottom of the ladder team. I see it as an opportunity to commit to a tank/low finish with minimal additional cost.
Re: Is the season a lost cause
Yes. And this team should not try to fix it. Let's add a top 3-5 pick into this group!

I'll let y'all know when it actually is...if it is.

Re: Is the season a lost cause
Yes this season is a bust. Thomas, Kyrou, Schenn- none of them will lead this team to a good playoff performance much less a cup. If there is zero chance now and zero chance in the near future what are we doing here? I would add Parayko to that group- he has played great in the past but is showing no leadership and questionable decision making this year.
In the past we had guys like ROR who put the team on their back and could actually wick it up and influence games. Backes tried but was not effective- same with Schenn. ROR had enough skill and dedication to make plays- offense and defense- that changed games. That's what a leader does.
Both goalies have proven they are capable of above average to excellent play but not with the current skaters. No reason to suspect they have lost their ability.
I would say this team is adrift- no identity. No consistency. Last night they were winning some puck battles but then that went out the window and they just stopped covering guys. That indicates a team that has given up. They say they play for each other but if they are they must really hate each other.
