Their outfield is pretty fairly solid, and they've got Naylor at first.
But Seattle is also a pretty legit contender. I have no idea how their bullpen is shaking out, but an arm like Jojo could be really useful in shortening a play-off game. Maybe that could sweeten up a deal? Maybe that could grab us one of Hancock, Miller, or...dare I say...Kirby?
Re: Mariners Interested in Donovan
That would actually be a bad move. The Cardinals should be good by 2028. If we want Logan, sign in then.

Re: Mariners Interested in Donovan
I agree that Seattle could use Donovan in a a big way. I agree that Seattle has a really good farm system. That said, unless they change their practices, I don't see them as a fit. Of their top 10 prospects; their #1 (Emerson) isn't any more available than Wetherholt, their top 2 pitchers (Anderson, Sloan) seem to be off-limits, 2 are catchers (Ford, Stevenson), and #3 prospect Montes seems off-limits. What you are left with is #6 Michael Arroyo (bat first 2B), #7 OF Jonny Farmelo, an interesting player, but his next healthy season will be his first, #8 switch pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje (how's that for a name), and #9 SS Feinen Celesten.
If I'm trading Donovan to the Mariners, I want Ryan Sloan (who I think will be a #1 starter) and Lazaro Montes. Montes is a beast. There won't be any in between with him- he will either be a superstar, or he will be Nolan Gorman in Jordan Walker's body. One is about as likely as the other. Parting with them would be a departure of behavior for Seattle.

Re: Mariners Interested in Donovan
That's an interesting breakdown on what Seattle has and I agree it'll be tough to find a match until you get down into that range of farther off prospects. Sloan is a very recent draft pick. What do you think the organization needs more, starters that are close to MLB or prospects that are further out but with higher upside. A trade like you suggest would give us more high upside pieces that fit somewhere alongside Padilla and Ryan Mitchell on the timeline. Maybe a little closer to the big leagues than those two but still far off. Perhaps getting the most upside and the most value in the system is the best route, regardless of what level they are.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑03 Dec 2025 15:13 pm I agree that Seattle could use Donovan in a a big way. As much as we need outfielders we also would like a projectable option for CF. I guess during the rebuild years it'll be right to give Scott II a chance to grow into himself as a big league hitter. I was looking at preliminary draft options for 2026 and it looks like if we pick in the 2nd half of the top 10 there would be some college outfielders to pick from. That could be a quick route towards helping our outfield situation.

Re: Mariners Interested in Donovan
For Cards
Miller, Woo, or Sloan work.
But they just watched Cease get $200 million
To Seattle
Castillo would be a maybe. perhaps Sloan
I'd have some interest in Emerson as a 3B.

Then it becomes the Cards adding to Donovan to get
That higher upside player or Seattle attempts to give quantity to get Donovan.
The only thing that I read is that they might be motivated enough after 2025 to do something less comfortable than the normal.
Re: Mariners Interested in Donovan
Seattle will not trade Emerson. He will be their starting SS in 2027 and could be like Bobby Wtt. They will not trade Anderson as he will slot into their rotation likely next year. Montes could be available as mentioned he is a boom or bust candidate who likely ends up as a DH. It would be a stretch to put him in left field. Celesten is a 55 grade prospect switch hitter playing SS at high A ball as a 19 year old. Could see moving him to centerfield as he has the speed and arm to play that position.
My trade would be Donovan and Hjerbe for Logan Evans, Cijntje, Celesten and young infielder Becker. Evans is a young mlb pitcher who fits into their rotation immediately. Cijntje Gives you a high upside arm. Celesten and Becker are two very young high upside prospects. Hjerbe is being passed by 3 other left handed arms for the Cards and maybe 4.
If Seattle wants Romero instead they would need to add Bautista an 18 year old recent $2 million dollar international signee.

Re: Mariners Interested in Donovan
We won't actually be good Until we sign someone like Gilbert.
Maybe not this year, but at some point we are going to have to start signing and trading for proven talent - several of them - to add to our homegrown talent before that homegrown talent turns in a winning record on their own, because thats never going to happen in a vacuum.
Re: Mariners Interested in Donovan
I wouldn't want to trade Donny for quantity. He's worth more staying here than 3 more Fermins or John Kings are worth to us.renostl wrote: ↑03 Dec 2025 22:50 pmFair points.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑03 Dec 2025 15:13 pm I agree that Seattle could use Donovan in a a big way. and not think twice way before quantity.

Not sure about the M's TLR but I'd do that in a NYM giving the Cardinals their 25 yr old (26 ys old in Jan/2026) FOTR ACE who doesn't hit free agency until 2030!
