SEC talking heads are LOLing Eli extension

Post by hdhntr148 »

Saying he beats the usual suspects and gets whacked whenever he plays a team with a pulse is worth $11MM a year? Plus a tame fan base and very supportive powers that be? Guessing the bar is lowest in SEC there. But the prospect of jumping into the maelstrom of coaching carousel was so unappealing is why it got done fairly quickly and then you move on without the total chaos of most good players leaving and your assistants too.

Smarter ones knew it was merely function of this insane market place. So many better openings and just a couple of candidates.

The problem is that I doubt there was never any market elsewhere willing to pay Drinkwitz more than the $9 million he was making here. And his offense breaks down against any team with a pulse, with a QB and OC who can't get the job done. And STs are no prize, either. So the B of C was essentially bidding against itself in extending Drinkwitz and giving him a raise before he could prove he was raising his game. If he doesn't get this boring and inept offense fixed next year, fans will abandon the program in droves. Elite D is great, and Batoon is doing a great job. Such a waste this year with the reasonable schedule not to make the CFP.

Settling for mediocrity is okay, I guess, with the hope is that he's building for something better with the foundation he has laid. I'm just not sure the foundation is solid enough to build the skyscraper needed to reach the pinnacle of the SEC, which is Drinkwitz's stated goal. And I'm not sure if Drinkwitz will ever get past coaching games in "not to lose" fashion. We shall see now.

We had a good discussion on this topic over a bottle of Blantons, so you know our logic was sound :D . In general, we are paying for potential and not the finished product. Most top SEC schools are in a win now with an established coach mentality. Therefore like LSU did with Kelley, Bama did with Debours, etc… you hire someone who has won conference championships and played in college football championships. Missouri is building something that takes time. We are not in a 5yr tank and rebuild but rather incrementally improve each year mode. We are in a good spot and the contract will look better down the road assuming we don’t have to continually raise the ante.

You can call the BOC foolish free shot to take but they did what they thought the market demanded to insure Drinks return.

It's called business.

The odds of potentially losing Drink drove that business.

And to think they could have lost him and then just picked right back up and found some one now who can do all the wonderful things you want with status, recruiting, support and winning is unfounded thinking.

I'm in full agreement for some big changes....calculated winning changes......but I'm not for throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Say what you want, but home attendance has seen a rebirth since Drink. I have seats and the attendance that's even listed for pre-2020 doesn't tell you how empty the games were -- for years.
I doubt the other SEC coaches are laughing about that.
