Remember when Dick Vermeil was forced to hire Mike Martz?

Post by icon »

I do, and the result was a moribund offense being transformed into the Greatest Show on Turf. And Kurt Warner being transformed from an undrafted free agent from Northern Iowa into a Super Bowl winning quarterback.

I hope the Board of Curators is going to force Drink to hire a new, aggressive, imaginative OC. He cannot be going into next year with the same offense. And the same OC and QB. Nobody wants to watch that boring mess.

I do remember how awful Dickie V's offense was literally 3 yards and a cloud of dust boring. Also when Martz was OC he had to threaten to quit if they didn't keep Kurt Warner over a DV favorite as backup who went on to disappear from NFL after he was cut by Martz.

BTW hated it when Vermeil retired after winning SB because you knew a driven guy like him would be back in game. Later admitted it was massive mistake that his wive forced him to do.

But Martz being awful HC? uh he did get his team to the SB and a heavy favorite. But that's the year Belichek cheated massively by recording practices and then had his defenders attack and HOLD Rams great receivers and not allow them into patterns and limited the GSOT. Then some backup rookie QB had taken over in playoffs and this was his coming out party. What's his name again? LOL

Some low round draft choice named Brady. they only won because of awful officiating and a last second FG.

Yeah, Jerry Rhome. His passing offense consisted of a lot of button hooks and other simple routes that created no YAC. Martz's passing offense always had receivers on the move to create a lot of YAC.

I really hope the new deal for Drinkwitz does require that he get a new OC.

I remember watching a Rams game in 1998 and the announcer coming unglued at how long Tony Banks would take to make a decision to throw. He literally said, “throw the (bleep) ball”, then came back after the commercial and apologized. That summed up that Rams team well.

what was crazy was Warner was the 3rd string QB behind two duds the year before Martz came. Trent Green was a nice pick up and he got injured. Had he not gotten injured..... divine spirits was floating in the air then

Hmm, I'm not a STL guy, but I remember it differently.

Vermeil came out of a 10+year retirement to coach and it took him a couple season to understand the current game-speed and athleticism. They win the SB and he retires again. Then the "Martz was the real reason for SB season" chatter started. In hindsight, way more credit should have been given to Warner IMO. Marts had success with Warner, but he breaks his hand or something and Martz never wins another playoff game.

Meanwhile, Vermeil ends up in KC and with Trent Green and Priest Holmes and they have the #1 Offense three years in a row.

My point is without a QB, any team will struggle and the OC often gets way more credit or criticism than they should IMO. Great QBs make everyone else look better. Drink needs to find a QB if they are going to take the next step and no OC is going to makeup for that.

You remember wrong. The difference between Martz's offensive scheme and Jerry Rhome's was like the difference between the Renaissance and the Dark Ages. And Martz polished Warner into what he became. No Martz, no SB.

Sure you need a good qb to win no doubt. GOOD, not necessarily GREAT, which has imo been proven many times.

But I contend a GOOD qb MUST have a GREAT OC to win. An OC who knows and understands the limitations of the guy and team he's telling what to do and when to do it.

Great post! QBs are what makes an offense great. Period.
