They need to generate more shots. Somehow.
I watch these guys and I see them dump and chase (because they struggle to effectively skate with the puck into the zone), cycle the puck and whiff on the shot or hear Kerber say, "Juuuuust a bit outside" (thank you Harry Doyle).
The fact is, the Blues have a shots on goal percentage of 10.4%, which is slightly below the league average of 10.8%. The team ranks 22nd in the league for both shots on goal and shooting percentage, indicating they are not generating as many high-percentage scoring opportunities as other teams. The Blues are also 27th in the league in shots per game, showing they struggle with overall shot generation, which contributes to their lower total goal count.
While their SOG% is close to the average, the lower overall shot volume means this slight inefficiency has a larger impact on their total goals scored. They need to generate more shot attempts and improve their efficiency to match or exceed league averages in scoring.
The eye test while watching the game seems to correlate with the stats. It's frustrating. They seemingly pass waaaay too much and do their best Rick Vaughn impersonation when shooting. Or nail the goalie in the chest.
Something needs to change.
Shoot the $#@% Puck!
