Who would you chose for Offensive Coordinator?

Post by Curmudgeon »

If, by chance, Mizzou should need a new football Offensive Coordinator, who would you choose? Why?

A list would be helpful ...

[No, I have no idea. That's why I'm asking.]

Make Petrino say no.

Then start considering others.

I’d add Kelly to the list at the top, but I seriously doubt that’s the path he’ll take.

Who is going to bring this person in.....Drink and committee? Surely this is a position he gets consultation on right?

I'm not informed enough as some of you about such candidates and their availability or willingness to move but I would look for a coach who has a proven record of doing well with what that coach has to work with. It does not have to be a name from the marquee of the past.

Stats for an OC must be important not discounting that I would start with that. But I would look deeper and want an OC that knows precisely how to play to my teams strengths and and be pliable to circumstance and not to any particular preconceived grand playbook or system.

I think it's tricky as it gets to land the right guy, big name or not.

Chase Daniel, there is nobody better at film study then him, and he has been exposed to probably 13 different offenses over his career.

Chase would probably be good at it, but is he wanting to do that?

I agree with Armchair. Start there!

I would try to stay with people who have SEC/Texas/Florida experience. People like Arroyo are hot names, but he is a west coast guy.

Not as an Offensive Coordinator, but QB coach to start, learn about being a coach and work into it when the time comes.

I actually want a guy who has a system that is variable and that has been proven to work. I want a track record of proven results. And I want this offense to get out of boring mode and fear mode carried over from the Odom years. Where games come down to the 4th quarter all the time. What is wrong with a relative blowout including explosive plays in the passing game?

And I want a guy who will be involved in recruiting great offensive players, especially at quarterback. It won't be easy, though, to retain somebody like that if he has a successful year or two. Continuity is important, but success can interrupt that if the OC wants to move on and up. And in that respect, maybe a guy like Petrino would be ideal because his head coaching days are probably behind him.

The problem with any OC who does a good job here is in keeping him. There’s lots of universities looking for head coaches and very few coaches are going to stand in the way of a coordinator looking at a promotion to run his own program.

Finding an OC to fix the offense is one thing, keeping him is another thing. There is so much money in college athletics today, even a coach like Drink who hasn’t shown he can win against the SEC top tier is in demand and can command a huge salary. He may have his warts but universities are willing to pay him for what he does bring to the table. If I had to guess, the university had received inquiries about Coach Drink and moved quickly instead of taking the chance in losing him. Again, finding a good OC is one thing, keeping him here is another.

I tend to think that if people believe a new OC will simply solve the problem, we are being somewhat short sighted. There are a bunch of people out there who could be outstanding OC’s. The question is how much influence will Drink have, and whether the HC is able to cede power or, at a minimum, be honest with himself in self evaluation and willing to change things. From my experience I see a pretty arrogant guy set in his offensive ways. That’s not necessarily bad-lots of good coaches are arrogant. But for a guy who’s put out teams that display the same problems, and not everything is a problem, there needs to be a reckoning.

Here is a thought. If Kiffin takes the HC role today with LSU, could Charlie Weis become available. Kiffin will probably take him to LSU with him, but there was in season discussions on a riff between those two, so maybe Kiffin goes another way. If Weis is out there he would be a steal for anyone who needs an OC. He worked under Saban and is one of the best recruiters in the country. Plus, he may bring Trinidad Chambliss with him. Again it is a long shot, but can’t go wrong with trying to hire the top OC in the SEC. The only downside is his alma mater, but we can chalk that up to being his fathers fault.

Drink won't bring anybody in that he can't control.
