As of right now we have $20M and 2 prospects for our best pitcher.
So, this just confirmed we are officially rebuilding.
Everyone here is so ecstatic over a couple of prospects.
One throws hard.
The other injured a lot.
Bottom line, we are most likely last in the division after this move.
Really nothing to celebrate here.
He may reinvest the $20M into another free agent.
That will help.
But as of this moment, Cards are a last place team.
Of course we have much of the off season to go.
So, let's see what happens.
So what? If they kept him they would finish next to last again at least now they have prospects who may help them win in the future instead of an old pitcher who can’t pitch in the heat of St. Louis and wasn’t going to help them win now or in the future
Well, if you thought they had a lousy rotation before the trade.
Well, just look at it after the trade.
I don't give a rats a z z about dEwitt's money.
Do you care about years of control?
Yeah sorry, just getting a couple of fringe prospects doesn't get me excited.
Fitts was a FG Top 100 in MLB prospect before he was promoted to the majors last year.

Clarke is a FG Top 100 in MLB prospect right now.
damaged goods might be a better description.
The irony of your screen name against this post just screaming right now...lol
No kidding lol he was probably whining about signing the injured carpenter
I'm fine with signing some projects - especially when it takes nothing but cash.

I'm just not the least bit excited about these trades - its a long shot that enough develops. Carpenter had at least pitched in the majors. There's a lot more work to do, but most of our future core that we should count on will come from our own drafting, and trades for already proven or much closer to ready talent.

It’s an even longer shot that gray was going to help the cardinals finish anything other than next to last next season so I’ll take the long shot over the longer shot. The more big arm high upside pitchers he picks up the higher the likelihood one or more of them hits love the strategy

Its like the Mongomery trade all over again. Keeping Monty wasn't going to win, but what we got back didn't move the needle either. Doesn't mean you don't make any trades but why get so excited about a nothing burger and act surprised when realists aren't excited?

Maybe there's a higher upside this time, but nothing to count on anytime soon. Clarke is nowhere near the "MLB Ready" that MM and many other posters suggested we should seek. The other guy is a downgrade to our rotation.

As I've said many years in the past - why can't BDW sign the replacement FA players first with the "savings", then sell off to balance the budget and roster after? Take a risk and also take some FA options off the table for the other team to make your own remaining trade pieces more valuable.

Right now you get it mo was dumb and waited to trade him at the deadline when he could only get meh players because he was a free agent and only had a couple of months left and because they couldn’t offer him QO bloom was smart and traded gray now instead of being dumb and waiting until the deadline so he got a big arm high upside prospect: the more big arms he picks up the more chances one or more hits it’s a fantastic strategy and refreshing instead of watching mos idiot hope and prayer strategy

You are among those refusing to accept reality. The reality is terrible but it’s here.

There is a ton of damage done by Mo and Dewitt that set this team back. There is a difference between being happy about a rebuild vs realistically looking at the situation and understanding they need it.

There was nothing realistic available that was going to save the 2026 season even if we held onto Gray.

Please tell me how you would turn the Cardinals into a World Series contender in 2026?

Dewitt and Mo lied to themselves about where this organization was and left it in the worst place possible. A mediocre team with no future.

They are finally taking a path to fix this. It’s now on Bloom to fix this. Time will tell if these moves work out.

Not all of the prospects will pan out. Some will be traded in the future when we have our core in place for more impactful pieces.

And what was Sonny Gray winning us this year? He was on the 25 team, how did that team fare?

Of course we have much of the off season to go.
So, let's see what happens.
So what? If they kept him they would finish next to last again at least now they have prospects who may help them win in the future instead of an old pitcher who can’t pitch in the heat of St. Louis and wasn’t going to help them win now or in the future
Well, if you thought they had a lousy rotation before the trade.
Well, just look at it after the trade.
I don't give a rats a z z about dEwitt's money.
Do you care about years of control?
control of what exactly. Boston gave up on these 2 for a reason. One looks like a Pallante that can't stay healthy, and the other has no control and hasn't graduated A ball at age 22. Projects like that are a dime a dozen. Its fine to trade a Fermin type or a backup catcher once in a while to take a flyer on one, but you can't expect them to move the needle of your future at all. Odds are better than even that Clarke never produces significant MLB WAR.
Montreal gave up a lefty with massive control issues in the minors. As he got more experience he learned to harness it to his advantage into a Hall of Fame career. We have no idea how these players will pan out. The only know was Gray wasn’t going to help STL win in 2026 so getting future help with high upside was a massive win.

They traded an old pitcher who can’t pitch in the heat and hasn’t helped the cardinals win anything who is getting. Paid like an ace and doesn’t pitch like an ace what expertly were you expecting to get for him? Lol
He pitched deep enough and well enought to win 14 games, which is better than anyone else on either the Cardinals or a lot of other teams. No he's not an ACE but that is a contribution that we aren't going to get now. To me that's worth an incremental $20M of Bill's money that ISN"T going to get reinvested in someone better than Gray. I hope Bloom proves me wrong but I'm waiting.

The $20M to get thru the season with a few less innings of boo-birds, and Gray's experience to lend to whatever AAA pitchers we do promote is still worth something. If he's good in Fenway or on the road, Boston got a huge bargain.
You are still ignoring the question. What does Gray winning 14 do for the team when they are finishing forth and missing the playoffs? This team was not close to a World Series team. Staying mediocre fixes nothing.

I hope your life's plans aren't as myopic. When you have a bad team in a mid-market, the only option is playing the long game. Rebuild the player development, concentrate on international free agents and wait until the young players are good enough to spend big on FAs to complement the younger stars.

You think

Carp was an icon of low hanging fruit the day he was acquired couldn't pitch.

FWIW - had the Cardinals stayed mediocre the past several seasons, winning just a few more meaningless games each year, they probably don't land in a position to draft Wetherholt (who FG has as the highest ranked prospect from the 2024 draft) and Doyle (who FG has as the highest ranked prospect from the 2025 draft).

The goal should always be to win the division. Trade older players for younger players and roll the dice if you didn't last year.
Just keep Cardinas fans excited until September at the very least. I'm just an old guy wanting to see my Cardinals be relevant.

Again, massive is relative. Accumulate enough of these wins and might approach .500 next decade. I’m still waiting for the moves that I actually do excite me like outfielders which we have none of.

There’s time for Bloom to do his job, but he hasn’t done enough yet to make me excited
