Then it'll cost you J. Soto or B. Witt, Jr. or N. Kurtz + J. Wilson.

Even then, as scouty pointed out, the Brewers (Royals and A's) would lose him to the Dodgers or Yankees or Mets my the day he hits FA.
Per BTV, Kurtz and Wilson would be in the right ballpark for Skenes, but I don't think that actually helps the Athletics. Skenes doesn't make them a contender if they lose Kurtz and Wilson in the process.

Likewise I don't think the Royals would offer Witt as the net doesn't make them that much better now.

And I don't think the Pirates would want Soto because they can't afford to pay him and he could opt out in four years.
Nope, the A's would lose two great young hitters and then Skenes when he hit FA.

Same w/Witt and KC losing him to FA.

Just gave Soto as the type of young stud it would take to land the best pitcher in MLB who still has years of low cost control in a "fair" trade.

It's really a tough call for the Pirates.

The teams that can afford to keep Skenes after trading for him won't offer the players it would take for them to get equal value.

Or they'd offer prospects and it's a c r a p shoot if they ever payoff as MLB players.

But by keeping him, the Pirates are still never even be a playoff team.

Could the Cubs offer PCA + O. Caissie............then re-up K. Tucker?
BTV says the Cubs would have to offer more than that.

It's going to be really hard for the Pirates to get back equal value.

Which is why Chourio, Pratt, Quero gives them a chance to.

If Chourio is even a 4+ fWAR player for eight years, that is a pretty good return.

Jackson Chourio (BTV 83.3)
Cooper Pratt (BTV 28.6)
Plus another lesser prospect (BTV ~15)

For

Paul Skenes (BTV 127)

If the Brewers want to compete against the Dodgers, etc. in the postseason next year, adding Skenes who could single handedly win the two games in a short series would be a huge step forward.

From the Pirates perspective, Skenes (with 4 years of team control left) is probably never going to be more valuable as a trade piece. They get a big talent in Chourio who will only be 22 next year and who is already signed to a contract which can run through 2033 with two team options at the end. Plus they get more value in Pratt and another prospect.

Maybe the Brewers have to add Jeferson Quero (BTV 20.8).
I think teams like the Brewers (and even the Cards now?) need to be a little more creative when it comes to their roster.

Chourio is more like a 3 fWAR player and he comes w/the reminder of that $82M/8 yr contract that accelerates to $15M in 2029 which may be to much for the Pirates and when he has to be traded.

I'd take PCA, Caissie and J. Rojas over Chourio, Pratt and Quero.

PCA could be a 4-5+ fWAR player for them until 2031 when he hits free agency (or become a great trade asset once he hits ARB 3).

brewers say yes, pirates laugh. Make him publicly available and you get far better offers. Beyond comparing player for player, Skenes is incredibly marketable. Season tickets sold immediately

Yes BTV would have Crow-Armstrong, Cassie, Rojas about the same as Chourio, Pratt, Quero. So you could go either way.

I think it depends on how much better you project Chourio will get.

Do you think the rats' will actually trade Skenes this coming season because I don't.

I wonder if T. Skubal has a better chance of being dealt?

If the Pirates trade Skenes, it will be to some team that is willing to empty their farm system for him. Having said that, if the Pirates are willing to add 2 hitters to their line-up this year, they have the pitching to contend now. If they want to trade Skenes, I did not look up the Baseball Trade Value to see if these match up or not. But, would the Yankees trade all 5 of their top prospects for Skenes or maybe even more? They need pitching. Would the Mets? If the Pirates trade him, I want an entire bucket full of top prospects back. The reality is the Pirates are like the Cards have been the last several years, a lot of pieces in place, but they need 2 or 3 more to be a real contender. They should go for it right now while they have the pitching in place.

Pirates would hang up immediately. Gonna take a lot more for Skenes, and the Pirates have already said they ain't trading him anyway. Gonna take a Herschel Walker type offer to make them rethink that.
