Zollers redshirt

Post by Armchair QB »

I was thinking Zollers could still save his redshirt but just looked and he had a little action in 2 early games. Action in 5 total now. He burned the RS right or am I not up on the rules?

With portal and NIL it really doesn’t matter anymore.

But does that essentially waste a year of his eligibility?

Not really. Once Horn went down, it was imperative that Zollers get snaps in those blood donors games. Unfortunately, Mizzou didn’t take advantage of those opportunities by restricting the plays they allowed Zollers to execute to handoffs and a couple of passes to the flat. They should have allowed Zollers to run the same plays as Pribula. ND just laid 70+ on Syracuse. It’s one thing to run up the score with your starters. It’s another to get your backups critical experience. Besides, blood donors are paid to, well, bleed and bleed a lot.

Notre Dame did that to score points withe CFB committee to try and ensure a playoff spot or enhance their seed.

Miami did the same by throwing a last second TD pass although they were already up two scores against Virginia Tech.

As far Zollers running plays against cupcakes. That would prove nothing against an inferior team defense.

He sees much better athletes on the other side of the ball in practice.

I agree. And experience, even against blood donors, is valuable for a freshman QB because it can build confidence. And the mental side of sports is often ignored.

In practice, he’s wearing a red jersey. Practice is not the same as game experience. There aren’t 62,000 fans in the stands (ok, 45,000 by the time he’d get in). If experience against blood donors doesn’t prove anything, why play them in the first place? Apparently, they prove nothing for the starters, either.

Throwing a couple of passes against Central Ark. in August or early September isn't going to prepare him for Texas A&M in November.

He also played against Louisiana and UMass. Pribula was left in WAY too long in each game. He could have played almost half in each of those games and would have gotten invaluable game experience.

Of course, there is the Indianapolis Colts during the days of Manning philosophy: they asked their OC how many reps Manning’s backup got in practice. The OC said none. None? Yeah, because if Manning goes down, we’re f’ed and we don’t practice f’ed.

You can't have it both ways.

Prior to this season Pribula hadn't started in any meaningful games and when he did play it was mostly as a gadget or running play.

When Cook was here Drinkwitz said numerous times that he needed the reps. If that was true then it was even more so with an inexperienced Pribula needing all the work he could see against teams prior to SEC play.

The common denominator remains the same. Taking snaps and throwing a few passes against those teams two months ago wasn't going to prepare him to beat the third ranked team in the country a few weeks ago.

Today, Gabe DeArmond mentioned that Zollers redshirting is a possibility. I don't pretend to understand the rules, but I assume Gabe knows what he's talkmg about. He mentioned it as a possibility in the scenario that Beau comes back next year.

I hope Drinkwitz leaves and takes his Beau with him. You know he will be the de facto starter next year if they both stay despite Pribula's lousy performance. Turtle coach, turtle QB.

I can see where you may think that but no, you don't really know that to be TRUE.

NCAA football players have five calendar years to play four seasons (COVID-19 rules kind of screwed that up but let's forget that). Bowl games don't count toward the four game cap (limit for "not playing") toward redshirting - neither do conference championship games. However, Zollers has appeared in games against Central Arkansas (8/28), University of Louisiana (9/13). Massachusetts (9/27), Vanderbilt (10/25), aTm (11/8) and Mississippi State (11/15) - so he's blown past the four game rule (he's appeared in six games to date). It is my understanding that he lost his redshirt status the minute he took the field against aTm. Playing in a fifth regular-season game — even one snap — ends the redshirt.

So any talks of redshirting Zollers would be for the 2026 season and beyond.

If both remain at Mizzou, I expect a true competition between Zollers and Pribula for the starting position next year.

you can tell whose actually COACHED FB offenses and who hasn't by your comments. Only a MORON would NOT get your backup QB into the early games when he is basically your only option. Kid had only played a couple games in HS last year before getting hurt so it should have been imperative to get him into LIVE ACTION games and reps. Yes any reps against guys with different colored jerseys on DOES matter with a stadium full of fans where what your doing on the field matters. It's figuring out what's happening on the fly and making adjustments. Or else you risk having him thrust into game and looking like he did. Deer in the headlights and with a game plan guaranteed to NOT be successful.

You need to understand that FB coaches overall are the dumbest in all sports. they get hung up on silly phrases and tendencies because everyone does it. In MU's case they do have a idiot for a OC and QB coach. You see the top teams do it all the time. it's the mediocre ones and next tier that doesn't like a MU or MS state who are then surprised that a guy you run into the LOS and takes big hits gets injured like Beau or Sam did.

No argument that Beau needed Reps but you HAD to have a plan in case he did go down like he did. tigers needed to have a balance there.
