Some folks want to claim that Mizzou needs more money in order to compete. If you were to spend 9 million dollars on one season of Tiger football in order to help them compete, what position would have the most influence on that goal ?
Ya could drop about 2 million and get yourself a good QB out of the portal for a year....
A very good RB could be had for 500K....
Ditto for a clutch WR who will make some plays 500K....
A great TE who can block and catch the ball with some speed to boot....300K
Of course you're gonna need a good O-line to block and pass protect your one year investments....
1.5 million can easily be spent for TWO quality tackles....the guy out of Nevada supposedly turned down 2 million to play for Oregon this year.
Another 1.5 million can be spent for a pair of Guards and a Center...the offensive line is THE most expensive group to buy per player on average
Of course, DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!....
Gonna need at least one edge rusher....cha' ching...500K minimum
A pair of experienced DTs.... be prepared to pony up 1 million bucks!
A pair of quality starting LBs.....set aside another 1 million greenbacks
Two CBs and a pair of Safeties....3 million dollars is a conservative estimate
A couple of kickers we can pull off the soccer fields, so we won't include them. Let's add all that up and throw in some $$$$ for the JV team....
If my math is correct that adds up to 12 million dollars, lets throw in another 35% for the backups and we can field a team for about 16 million dollars. Hmmmm, Google tells me that MIZZOU spent about 12 million dollars for player compensation in 2025 per the Columbia Missourian. Hmmmm, maybe we do need more money....
But let's get back to my original premise.....
If you were to spend 9 million dollars on one season of Tiger football in order to help them compete, what position would have the most influence on that goal ? I don't know, how 'bout we spend 9 million dollars on the ONE position that can have THE MOST EFFECT on all the other positions...ya know...let's get the most BANG for our bucks!
Let's give 9 million dollars to the Head Coach, our #1 salesman for the program, our walking/talking branding machine....MIZ!, our genius offensive mind, our leader of young men, the one man who REALLY does bleed black and gold! Let's give 9 million dollars to Eli Drinkwitz making him one of the top 10 highest paid Head Coaches in all of college football....SURELY THAT IS OUR WISEST INVESTMENT!?!?!?
(play the sound of air escaping from a balloon like a fake fart)
But what has that gotten us....
1 win and 10 losses against teams ranked in the top 10
7 wins and 14 losses against AP Top 25 teams
0-7 record against ranked SEC teams over the 2024 and 2025 seasons as of mid-November
43-25 overall record....basically you'll win 2 out of every 3 games you play with 30% of all games played against patsies out of conference making us "Bowl Eligible"....the plan must be working because we haven't lost a non-conference game in the last two years!
So imho, either the Head Coach of a college football team doesn't have as much influence as we think they do, hence if we have one that checks all the boxes except winning the big games, then an argument could be made for keeping Eli and his staff around for year #7.....or does that mean we can find a salesman HC for 5 million and spend another 4 million on players.
Or, if you want to play with the big boys on the big stage...even just once a decade.....then maybe we should be investing the money WE DO CURRENTLY HAVE on players who make actual plays on the field, rather than a HC who's claim to fame is never forgetting to say MIZ! after an interview....
I've seen enuff...if it walks like a duck, and it talks like a duck, it must be a duck!
