That's not what he's asking.
Everyone knows he's going to get extended and they are going to build around him. Should they? Is that good judgment? is the question and it's a very appropriate question in contact of the situation we have before us where Armstrong answred yes to that same question with his current players and look how weak and mediocre the other people he invested in are
Simple answer….yes they should and the easiest answer I can give you is , because every other GM in the league would do the same for this player. You can’t be afraid to build around a player because you think the contract might not work out in your organizations favor. There isn’t a GM in the league that has that crystal ball…no wanna be fan GM either has it either.
It’s a simple answer to an answered question. I stated they will extend him. But if nobody’s judgment is better than the other it suggests having the GM photo in my sig would directly contradict that point. It would be saying I believe in this guy over the other guys, and everyone. But if nobody has a crystal ball … ? Why the “badass GM authority” energy?
If we are stating that there is a “Bad (donkey) GM” category, Army is definitely one of the few in the league that falls into it…that can’t be argued. His time is about up, at least in at the front of the public eye, still think he will be involved behind the scenes for a bit. Not sure who you’d to bring in but you’re going to have to deal with an Army disciple in Steen.
I’d like to hear your top 5 GM’snot including Army.

Brobergs been incredible in STL he is a first pair guy on almost any NHL team and would look a helluva better on a better roster. How many points would he have if ANYONE on the Blues could finish? Broberg is going to be in the $8 million ish range

I don’t know who anointed him as a bad (donkey). He’s been a pretty good GM and rates very high among his peers. I’ve been on record as stating his biggest issue is that he’s too loyal. Hated the Steen contract, hated the Buch contract. All GM’s have some stains on their records, there is nothing wrong with the Kyrou contract. It’s a different day and age…young players get paid early…Army has transitioned to this stage of the NHL as well as every other GM.
Does he look like a top #1 D? Not yet and maybe never. I do think he's a top pair guy who should be a #2 so yes you can build around him. I'm in the camp that not all teams including cup contenders have legitimate #1 caliber Dman on their squad.

He’s been a mixed bag for me. He earned some respect back from me for admitting his mistakes with how he handled pietrangelo.
I’m still unsure about his capacity for younger player evaluations though…and roster construction/development. Seems pretty similar to when he was canned in Dallas.
If this was a bigger market, he would have been fired…right or wrong
Is he a player you build around? Not at the moment. I still want to see more out of him in all situations before that distinction is made. Though him becoming the highest paid player in franchise history is just a part of the increasing cap structure. I realize it seems [shirt]ty to think he's going to get more $$$ than guys like Pronger, Petro, Chopper, Demitra, Hull, etc, but the salary structure is what it is. I just want to see the guy put in positions to succeed on special teams more and for him to show more intensity in situations against top players.

That’s a pretty high standard question. For a guy the Blues just plucked for a 2nd rounder n change Id say Broberg is doing extremely well.
I really like his poise and steady play. Crazy bc last season was his first full NHL season.
I don’t see steady at all. He’s vanilla and weak. He’s also pushing 25.
Baloney. I'm not saying he plays exactly the same way as, nor has the same strengths/disappointments as Bouwmeister, but there are certainly similarities in style of play as well as in the types and levels of criticism that (you mainly) were thrown at Bo and now Bro. They are both much better than given credit for. I'm to saying Norris Candidate every year, maybe not ornery enough for your or some others' liking, but dam good & reliable D-men, excellent skaters, similar reach that are good and valuable to our team. Maybe not the sole piece, but certainly one of the pieces to build around.

This is partly true, but why roll the dice with term? Make him earn it.
Has anyone brought up that there is a scenario where Broberg does NOT want to sign an 8 year extension in STL?
He might not like what he is seeing from the team/organization.
Broberg might be the party that wants to roll the dice. He might prefer a bridge deal to see how things play out.
Is his agent a hard-(bleep)?
On the ice he is soft but still might fill out more so he can at least lean on some forwards more frequently.
Broberg does have height, reach, and speed. We can't discount his Finals experience as well.
So, there's a lot to like including his age.
You can't have it all though: If he had an edge to his game, the Oilers would have never let him walk.
I mentioned in another thread a few weeks back that 7 per would be a good number for the Blues.
I just can't see him getting the same coin as the 4 other younger LHD that extended recently.
They all play on the PP, Broberg does not.

I'd hope that's the approach they're taking. Two year extension before committing.

Agree with most of your post. But no way they get him to extend for $7.0m AAV. Not after Army just gifted old man Fowler $6.1m for 3 more years. We may not agree, but if they sign him to the max deal, which I think is 7 years with the new CBA, it’s going to be in the $8-9.0m range or he’ll simply sign a bridge to UFA in 2028 and probably be gone.
Broberg is only in his second full season. He could easily develop into a top pair player. He flashes high end skill at both ends of the ice. His floor is top 4 D. Still a piece you keep moving forward.
As far as consistency the team needs to have confidence in the goaltending. If a team doesn’t have that confidence it affects how everyone plays.
If both goalies can have even average stats the rest of the year then the players including Broberg can build more confidence.
Petro struggled with consistency his first few years and really up until 2019. At various times they had to keep waiting his partners trying to get him going.
Have patience.
