League average is .245.

Walker hit .215. He had 78 hits in 363 ABs. To hit .245 he needed 89 hits.

Scott II hit .216. He had 86 hits in 398 ABs. To hit .245 he needed 98 hits.

I don't really think a total of and additional 23 hits from Scott II and Walker would have made a huge difference in winning unless one or both would have shown great production in the additional combined 23 hits.

This team needs at least one slugger, and it doesn't look like it will be Scott II or Walker.

If Winn Walker and Scott hit for league average, combined with JJ Herrera and Donovans replacement, would the Cardinals be

- below .500
- .500
-or above .500.

My thought is, if these guys improve, isn’t that the same as old prospects blossoming. Just took time and right environment.

Then the adding of two studs aces, and a big bat, would make them formidable.

If these guys don’t produce, then the job to over haul is immense.

Thought.
Man, punctuate. Couldn’t figure out who Scott Walker was.

I’m ok banking on improvement from a growing and healthier Winn. The other two, any plan that banks on them improving is selling magic beans.

I don't think any of those three will be league average (100 wRC+) hitters.

But if I had to pick, then it would be Winn and just at league average (100 wRC+).
Meh. I think Winn just finished his sophomore year. Expect 115 WRC+ this year.
I expect him to be a 90 - 105 wRC+ hitter for his career sans an outlier season or two when he might reach 110.
I think you are in for a pleasant surprise.

I hope you're right huge, I've been a fan of his since he was at Memphis.

But

After seeing him for over 1,300 PA's I'm just not seeing the offensive upside above being a 90 - 105 wRC+ player (aside from those couple outlier years he might have).

His OB% (.304 career) is just too darn low and he has no real slg% (.376 career) upside.

He also doesn't have the frame to get stronger (re: add muscle) which could add some power.

That said with his Gold Glove defense all he really needs to be is a league average (100 wRC+) hitter to be an asset.

Just not an all-star caliber player or a guy I'd build my team around.

But he's a great complimentary piece w/that glove at a premier defensive position.

His first full year as a major leaguer: .267 .314 .416 .730. Minor league stats: .271 .350 .440 .790.... Nah, he can improve on those.

Winn is already at league average. He shouldn’t regress. If Walker can’t make the line, he has no value as a player as his defense is middling.

Scott will always have a glove. And hopefully maintain speed. No reason he can’t hit better.

If these three only add six wins, that’s five hundred. With some luck and a couple big seasons from the others, we could be relevant.

As I have stated before, Scott only needs to try and mirror what his buddy on the Marlins does.( Jacob Marsee) Marsee hit .292, with a .363 ob%. He uses the whole field, bunts well, and could care less about hitting home runs. He still hit 5 of them. Scott “ could “ replicate that, but so far hasn’t came close, because he tries to pull everything and hit the ball as hard as he can. He doesn’t need to do that. That’s not his skill set, but until he accepts that, he won’t mount to much as a hitter.

Walker showed signs late last year of improvement, so let’s see if that continues, keeping my fingers crossed. Brown calling him out may have done some good, we’ll see! Walker was a .300+ hitter in the minors, the ability is there, but is the mental make up?

Winn, just needs to stay healthy. He was a .280 hitter in 2024, until he got homer happy. That continued over into the start of 2025, until he wised up and started hitting to all fields again. However, his knee issues hurt him a lot I feel. Masyn should routinely be a guy that hits near .280 with 12-15 homers, possibly 20 as he matures. The key will be for him not to be seeking out the homers, but letting them come to him.

I think all three, will be better, but by how much is the key.

Nice write. Do you feel if they all hit league average or better, and the other six hitters hold their own, you think .500?

I agree about the "heroism" complex which (IMO) is going to cost him becoming a better hitter because he thinks of himself as being a home run hitter when he's clearly not.

Too many times instead of cutting down his swing in late inning situations he's up there swinging for the fences trying to be "the hero" and 99% of the time he fails.

And I hope to get a ton of "told you so's" when he becomes that .800 OPS hitter, sadly I only think you may get to send them a year or two out of his fifteen year career.

What I would like to see is a trade of Nootbaar and another year with the birds on the bat with a healthy Donovan. The first half of the year when Donovan was healthy he was elite. I worry that expecting Wetherholt to replace his bat this year is too much pressure. I’d like to see Donovan in Left Field and I hope Walker rises to well above league average. It’s also time to see Gorman hit 30 plus bombs. Maybe more importantly than hit league average, Scott needs to run more often.
" Scott needs to run more often." you have to get on bases first before you can "run more"

I disagree. With his speed, he will learn to best utilize it. If he hits more, just singles, we have a shot at a double by results. That’s a bonus.

This is a weapon I’d spend organized time trying to perfect.
