3 teams reported to have interest in Sonny Gray

Post by ramfandan »

The Atlanta Braves have been mentioned by media as they have indicated they seek a starting pitcher . The Braves are looking to rebound from a rough 2025 season . Would Sonny Gray waive his NTC to go to Atlanta ( he says he like to play for a contender in 2026 ) ? Possibly, but we do know that in previous seasons he sought teams near his geographical home area of Nashville , Tn. Atlanta is closer to Nashville (247 miles ) than St. Louis to Nashville (322 miles ).
Two other teams in the past 24 hours have been speculated as having interest : the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles .

Bloom has been 'listening to offers' as he puts it .
Chaim has also been handling the Gray situation in a classy manner stating the Cardinals would be 'thrilled' to have Sonny return this year and value him highly. (that 'value him highly' is baseball talk for we are not going to give him away cheaply ) . Gray on his part has recognized the Cardinals are in rebuild mode and would like to shed age and salary both. So Sonny seems to be willing to move on to a good fit for him.
As long as he is OK with the Braves, being just 247 miles and a 4 1/3 hr. drive on I-24 to Chattanooga and south on I-75 to Atlanta may be perfect for Gray's family.

“Reported” and “speculated” are two different things.

I think the NTC is potentially complicating things, but I feel like he is a type of pitcher that a lot of teams seek out. He’s a veteran. He’s well respected by basically everyone. He’s still pretty good if he’s your #2 or #3 pitcher. He’s only on the hook for one year., but if he’s good, then you can pick him up for 2027. And if the Cardinals are willing to eat some money, then he could end up bringing back something very nice.

Agree, Ronnie ! He is a well respected veteran pitcher. Former 1st round draft pick who has pitched 13 years . You don't have that long a career as a starting pitcher without being very good ... 125 wins with a 3.58 ERA

I watched a Bernie video about Sonny and he was talking about Joe Ryan of the twins and comments he made about gray raving about him and his influence on their starting staff and how they would have probably made the post season if they had kept him basically Ryan pretty much said a guy who pitched for them in 2022 and 2023 basically walks on water lol if he raves about him like that I can definitely see u being right that a lot of teams would be interested him because I’m sure his reputation which Ryan raves about is well known in baseball

Atlanta has really always made the most sense. If they are in on Gray now, I'd make them the heavy favorite.

Atlanta makes sense on paper. But he puts up terrible July numbers since the sweat affects his grip. That could become a June-August problem in Atlanta. Baltimore would be a nice fit but they hate parting with prospects.

Technically, August has been his best month by ERA over his entire career. *shrugs*

I expect Bloom will have more than three teams interested in S. Gray, he could help any contenders TOTR.

Bidding war should bring back a great return as long as BDWJr kicks in $10+M.

One year of Gray vs $100-200+M long term for a free agent = strong market for Gray.

Seven pitchers in their Top 10 prospect list, could we get one?

Then why do they need Gray?

Prospects potentially years away -vs- known major league quality starter who can help them win in 2026?

Only 1 of those 7 pitchers have an eta sooner than 2027.

Atlanta is a good match. They attribute much of their bad 2025 to
the rotation getting devastated. A team that might overpay slightly for
what hopefully for them is short term with all those arms coming.

SG is a top 3 not easy to find without spending total dollars or players.
IF SG had a good 2026 he could be had for 2027 too with that option
or give him $5 million to go away.

13 in their top 20, but maybe their position players are weak?
Throw in $10 million and a Catcher, they don't have any, and get a better return?
Just need to choose wisely with some good luck.
