BTW DeWitt has the 11th best valuation with the Cardinals at $2.55 B so one slot under the top 1/3 teams. 30 years ago DeWitt bought the Cardinals for $150 Million with a M .

Yea, it's all fun and games signing all these players to free agent deals and trading for players who make a ton of money, but unless you're one of about 3 teams, it's not going to last. You've seen it again and again. It will come back and bite you and next thing you know you're in a lengthy rebuild. I don't care how many billions the owner has, they don't like seeing that money go to waste. Especially if they can't win a WS despite spending all that money.

They also know that even if they are one of the top 3 spendors even if those 3 teams would make the final four teams, only ONE team will bring home the trophy . Mets, Yankees, Phillies, etc. have found that out the last two year for sure

Yep. It seems so easy, especially if you're some kind of billionaire used to being able to pay for anything you want, to tell yourself that all you have to do is just pay for the most expensive players that you can and you're guaranteed to win. But it doesn't work that way. And another thing we know about billionaires is that most of them are spoiled babies. They don't get what they want, so eventually they take their ball and go home.

Not exactly on topic, but Rob Rains did an article stating that the Cardinals should trade for Fernando Tatis Jr. I guess SD is said to be making some noise at the GM meetings that he could be available. While I like the idea of trading for a player like him (young, about to enter his prime, only signed through age 35 season, RH OFer), where I think it falls apart is the only guy he mentions in the trade talk is Sonny Gray.

I'm sure the Padres could use a pitcher, but I think you're going to need a lot more than Sonny Gray to get that deal done. And I'm guessing that including a Contreras or Donovan or Burleson in that deal probably doesn't get it done either. If I were the Padres, I'd ask for young, stud players in return who aren't going to cost much. I think other teams would offer that, but the Cardinals can't afford to start trading prospects like that right now.

Anyway, just thought it was interesting.

Interesting. He will be 27 when the season starts, but since his suspension for PED he has not had a really great season offensively. But he sure would be better than anyone we have at this time.

Platinum gold glove winner (again) with a 125 OPS+ would sure look nice in our lineup and OF. No he's not the slugger he was pre-PED suspension, but a 5 win player is a 5 win player - helps us immensely. Yeah the contract is big money, but he's "only" signed through age 35 so it should age about as good as it can for those mega deals (unlike Bogaerts and Machado both signed through age 40).

Would be an interesting first, bold move by Bloom! My guess is another team(s) would way outdid us for Tatis though.
