Goold indicating that Gray is being shopped while Bloom in market for another SP??
If looking to dump Gray’s contract why even bother with another FA SP?
I'm guessing he might try to acquire a SP via trade or is he trading exclusively for prospect?

Trade Gray for prospect(s0
Sign a pitcher to a 1 year deal.
At deadline, hopefully trade that pitcher for prospect(s)

Because Gray's salary for next season is $35 MM. Their target for a new SP will be a pitcher with a much lower price. Obviously.
Why even bother…..everyone says its a throwaway year…..fill from within….another Lynn/Gibson year can be had via AAA or BP
I’d like to see them pursue Dylan Cease.

Hoosier59 wrote: 12 Nov 2025 12:52 pm To me it’s just sickening the way that the DeWitts won’t go that little extra to put a winning team on the field. I understand that Mo misspent a lot of their money and has put them in a hole, but where is all the dry powder we heard was there for years. None of it was ever spent! None! We always hear that there is money available for the right deal, but that deal never materializes!
I won’t say nobody, because there are always a few who want the Cardinals to spend stupid money, but very few Cardinal fans expect ownership to spend like the Dodgers, Mets and others. However, to spend like the Pirates, Rays, Reds, and teams like them is a slap in the true Cardinals fans’ faces. The Cardinals should be able to outspend those teams as well as the Brewers, and field a highly competitive team! Hopefully Bloom will make better decisions than Mo did and spend the DeWitts money more wisely, so they’ll be apt to let go of more of it! I want my Grandkids to experience what it’s like to watch the Cardinals in the playoffs and World Series, and be excited about the team, the way I use to be!
Well said.

What's sad is that is the narrative they are pushing - don't have money to spend - and a lot of people (including many on here) just accept that as fact. It's ridiculous for the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS to have a payroll this low and act like they HAVE to shed Sonny Gray just to have enough money to spend a little.

Absolutely ZERO reason payroll cannot be $180 M (honestly should be closer to 200M). I mean we aren't in 2015 anymore. Get real!!!
I haven't heard them say that they "can't" spend on players. What they have said is that they "won't" spend on players at that level right now. I believe them. I was a little stunned to hear Bloom say publicly that he thought the payroll might be similar to last year. That was new- and at least to me- unexpected.
Last year's payroll was pathetic, too, though. Not acceptable for this franchise. Period.
You're going to be unhappy for awhile.
Yep, it looks like being a billionaires (buzz) is in the forecast for Cards fans. Sad times.

Isn’t it extremely obvious? Even if they can’t trade Gray, they’re going to need innings in the rotation.

Gray
Liberatore
McGreevy
Pallante
Leahy/Mathews/Graceffo/Hence/Roby

That’s already a pretty thin rotation. Take Gray out and now what do you have? Gray is also one of their best trade pieces. If they weren’t in a rebuild they’d keep him. As it stands now, with one more year left on his deal, why keep him?

Expecting Hence to ever be in the Cards starting rotation is like me expecting Bigfoot to show up in my backyard.

Seattle has a surplus of quality starters- Seattle is potentially losing both Suarez and Polanco as FAs.

Seattle needs Donovan - Cards need fill in the blank:
Woo, Miller, Kirby etc

Last years #3 pick Kade Anderson. Worth very close to same in Future Value with BD.

I doubt they’d trade him so soon. They would probably go bc with what is soon to cost them.

Well someone has to take that spot. Maybe the plan is an inside job.

I think Bloom aims to acquire young controllable pitchers with the potential to be a top of the rotation starter. Cards would need to trade someone like Donovan to acquire that kind of quality. Seattle would qualify as a good trading partner.

Seattle would prefer to move Castillo over the others from what I've seen.
He has a NTC. He doesn't really fit the Cardinals either but he is similar
to a SG but younger, cheaper with control through 2027 with a 2028 option.
My guess is Seattle will attempt a similar deal as St. louis is after with Gray.

Woo was the lower rated before 2025. That may have flipped. He and Miller are controlled
to 2030. Kirby 2029, Gilbert is 2028, he's probably over $10 million now so does that figure
into anything for Seattle's side.

As Card4 mention Anderson would be great but would Seattle use the strategy of getting
roster help without subtracting from the MLB roster, since too much pitching doesn't
exist in spring and they drafted Sloan the prior season but he was a HS pick. Maybe Sloan
but they both may be a '27 or '28 at least away.

Goold had an article this morning that I read about this topic. He mentioned that a team like KC has a lot of pitching and is searching for a player like Donovan who would meet some of their needs. And also he mentions a trade last year for a pretty average catcher (Freddy Fermin) where San Diego received two young pitchers back.

So, I think you're probably looking at a scenario where they are trying to acquire some young pitchers through trade, along with one or two short term free agent acquisitions, to bolster the rotation. Even if you still end up with guys like Pallante and Leahy in the competition for a spot, you at least have depth.

Donovan may well be the best trade chip on the MLB roster. I would not dismiss
on what Gray could return. For a team like the Braves who are heavy with
pitching prospects that unfortunately for them are a year or more away, Gray
provides what they didn't have in 2025. They could also use SS/ middle infield.
One stop shopping?

Cards don't need to trade the entire team, just a few that don't project according
to Bloom and co. Donovan could fall in either category depending on what occurs with other
players. Arenado, Gray really do not.
