Good player but probably not worth what San Diego would ask. Kick the tires just to find out.

Unless the Padres kick in some $$ to offset that contract I’d say “pass”.
I also would have some long term concerns as I’m not sure that Tatis is totally with it upstairs???

Doesn't hurt to inquire about him. But doubt BDW would be on board with that contract. Got to keep that powder dry. Hahahaha. Ol Dollar Billy

Nice addition for a rebuilding team? I don’t think so. Too expensive. Maybe too old. When will we start to understand what a rebuild means?????

C. Bloom would make that deal in a NY Minute!

But BDWJr would only sign off if the Padres ate half of the remainder of the 14-year, $340 million contract extension with the San Diego Padres he signed in 2021.

Exactly. They are going to develop their own players and pay for the odd piece for fill in. I seriously doubt the Cards are going after any expensive player. Maybe in a couple of seasons if they are one player away from a WS contender. Not now.... They will hope JJ develops, and try develop others in the system. Next season will most likely be another flirting with .500 year...

All Star. GG in right field. .258 avg - 25 HR - 71 RBI - .814 OPS

His contract is 25:$20M, 26:$20M, 27:$25M, 28:$25M, 29-36:$36M annually
no-trade protection:
2021-28: may block all trades

I would assert from 29-36 he isn't worth $36 million a year and with the reality of budget restraints it would be untenable to carry all of that salary. Would San Diego agree to pick up 1/3 of that? Also he has full no trade. I wouldn't be thrilled about leaving San Diego for St Louis both in terms of the city and weather and the fact San Diego is a contender and St Louis isn't.

Still I'd kick the tires.

Agree with both of you, he's a great target for this particular team, but the acquisition cost is a huge question that needs to be sorted out. An equally important question is ownership's views in the short term. If they want to keep operating like the Reds instead of the Cardinals of old (pre-COVID or up through 2022/2023) then this doesn't make any sense. If they want to return to having a competitive payroll to build an attractive team, and go back to being opportunistic in acquiring stars via trade then this would make a lot of sense.

How much are you willing to give up to trade for Tatis vs. just signing Kyle Tucker? Tatis is younger, a better defender, a RH bat (nice for the short term, may not matter as much long term), but comes with a acquisition cost.

I don't think ownership is going to pivot off their current course, so this is all moot sadly.

Exactly

But if Bill was open to it, then I'd take him over Tucker for the reasons you listed even if it cost us Donny + Burleson as the OP suggested.

Of course the Cardinals could've had him years ago had they just listened to F. Tatis, Sr who BEGGED Mo to sign him (international signing w/the ChiSox for $700K). :x

200 mil?

I counted 286 mi and 9 years.

I respect Tatis's great defense, but post roids, he's like an .810 OPS player.

He's young. I think he could be really good for a while. But I don't know if I want to give up the majority of our resources for a left fielder.

But it is interesting.

25m AAV is actually very cheap for 6-7 WAR. But BDW, and some fans here just aren’t interested in elite players.

If 26 is too old we aren’t ever coming out of this “rebuild”.
