Yes, Even Our Silver Slugger Superman
Yes, even Superman. The Cardinals are re-setting the roster and so you have to go to market with just about everybody. See if there is something out there that serves the roster better going forward. I firmly believe that Burleson is playing in the top end of his range. Might he have a better season? He might. Marginally. This is what selling high looks like. (Think Kent Bottenfield) We have watched this year as Nootbaar’s trade value has fallen until he is worth less than 20% of what he was a year ago. Don’t do that with Burleson. By all means, if a team won’t pay for him properly- keep him- but find out. Many of the same teams that are interested in Donovan will be interested in Burleson. The contending teams that have need of a 1B, LF, or RF include; Seattle, Boston, Texas, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Cleveland, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If other trades don’t materialize on suggestions I have made earlier as priorities, I would want to see if something could be worked out with Texas for Alejandro Rosario, or the Dodgers for River Ryan. If for some reason these names just won’t work, there are other places Burleson can go.
Preferred destination and return- Boston Red Sox. Alec Burleson and another lower-level player for Jhostnyxon Garcia and Luis Perales. Garcia is a 22-year-old OF who is Boston’s #3 prospect and the #85 prospect in MLB. He touched the majors last season for 3 games. Garcia is a right-handed hitter with power. He has played mostly CF in his career so far, but has the arm and the bat for either corner. Garcia would be a potential middle of the order bat. Perales also just touched the majors last year. He is a 22-year-old right hander with a small frame (6’1” 160 lb). Perales is Boston’s #9 prospect; however, they have 4 pitching prospects above him. Perales is just back from TJ surgery. His fastball sits at 95-98 and grades out at 70 on the 20/80 scouting scale. He also sports a very good splitter which grades out at 60, and a slider grading out at 55. He has the floor of a closer. Burleson would play 1B for the Red Sox. This is a long shot. I look for them to shoot for Pete Alonso, and I look for that to take a long time.
Other good trade fits for the Cardinals; Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Rays.

Can they play third. You trade Nado, then Donovan, only thing left is JJ, with Saggese or less at second.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 07:44 am Yes, even Superman. I contend Donovan who has value, is too versatile to move. You only get a one tool player in return for a three plus player.

Not my pick, but I think they intend to play Gorman at third. I'm confused by your reference to Donovan here, but I wouldn't suggest trading Donovan for a one tool player.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 07:50 amCan they play third. Re: Yes, Even Our Silver Slugger Superman
I do that deal for Burleson. Donovan has to be moved or extended.
Re: Yes, Even Our Silver Slugger Superman
Problem with your approach is that, with Burleson and Donovan, you know what you have, going forward. The prospects you get in return are all of 50-50 value to make it in the bigs, regardless of where they currently rank. Then you’ll be performing this same routine for many more years to come , there’s no end. Youll be evaluating prospects eternally, waiting for them to reach some unknown “prime”, and them turn them over when this reached. You’ll become a .500 team at best during this timeframe
While you may get “blown away” with another for, say, Donovan, what are the odds of that happening?
The better approach is to address the holes in your roster, on the open market. Trade or release those that don’t have a future with your team. Give your starters some consistency in where they play.

Yea, I think I read it wrong. My bad on the Donovan reference. What I meant about one tool, like trading his super u abilities for a five inning pitcher. Again might be a bad analogy.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 07:54 amNot my pick, but I think they intend to play Gorman at third. I agree they can't move Donovan unless the get an amazing return because that leaves Gorman or Saggese as the option at 3B. The only possible upside is Saggese is young and could improve but that leaves a vital position up in the air.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 07:50 amCan they play third. Re: Yes, Even Our Silver Slugger Superman
These players like Donovan and Burleson aren't going to lead you to the promised land. They will keep you around 500 if that's why you want. To rise above that level, you have to trade them for prospects with higher ceilings. It's a gamble. But I'm not a 500 guy. Im willing to live thru a couple (more) bad seasons if that is what it takes. I think Bloom is the right guy and our player development is getting better by leaps and bounds. And thanks Talking Baseball for your write-ups. I dont have time to keep up with the whole league anymore.
Re: Yes, Even Our Silver Slugger Superman
Scoth-I think you will be disappointed if you are waiting for an "amazing return" for Donovan. He isn't an amazing player, or we wouldn't be shopping him. He's very good and a team looking for that one piece, a team with an already loaded mob group, may overpay a bit. I like him, and it's ok with me if they give him a fair extension. But we still need to be looking for a couple prospects with a higher ceiling than him.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 08:20 amI agree they can't move Donovan unless the get an amazing return because that leaves Gorman or Saggese as the option at 3B. He isn't HOF but it leaves a major hole at 3B if we move Arenado and Donovan and if we get mediocre return that raises a larger question. What is the franchise looking for? Are we going to accept 100 losses for a couple years and hope prospects develop? That could permanently crater the fan base.2ninr wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 08:30 amScoth-I think you will be disappointed if you are waiting for an "amazing return" for Donovan. Second, N. Gorman is going to be your opening day 3rd baseman if/when NADO is dealt (likely Donny traded too).
JJW is going to be the opening day 2nd baseman BDog and Saggese is nothing more than a back of the bench utility player.
Re: Yes, Even Our Silver Slugger Superman
That's a good question. We should have the answer in the next couple of months. My opinion, which means nothing, is they will stick with the guys whose value has cratered, Gorman and Walker. Probably Noot. Scott for sure. They will trade the guys with more value and the ntc's for prospects with higher ceilings than what we have now.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 08:51 amHe isn't HOF but it leaves a major hole at 3B if we move Arenado and Donovan and if we get mediocre return that raises a larger question.
I contend Donovan who has value, is too versatile to move. You only get a one tool player in return for a three plus player.

I'm sorry. You make way too much sense to post here. I shall have to report you.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 07:44 am Yes, even Superman. You are most likely right. Then the question is how will the fan base react to the dump part of dump and rebuild.2ninr wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 09:16 amThat's a good question. We can see what happened last year. How much farther can attendance fall? It's only a guess. I would think most of the fringe fans have already been lost. Mo being gone should bring back some people. What I do know is winning brings fans back. But how much farther attendance would fall is an unknown. But I think they are preparing for the lost revenue by lowering the payroll. I would be shocked if all the ntc's weren't traded.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 10:15 amYou are most likely right. Re: Yes, Even Our Silver Slugger Superman
I'm not convinced winning will bring fans back. We were 5 over .500 at the break and attendance was declining. I think primarily the TV deal has hurt attendance. People aren't paying $20 a month for something they used to get for free and as result interest in the games has decline. I may be a tiny minority for I can't stand DH baseball and that's why I wouldn't watch even if the games were available.2ninr wrote: ↑11 Nov 2025 10:32 amWe can see what happened last year. We could become Kansas City. Playoff team in 2025 and 25th in attendance. The made the WS twice and then did an epic dump and fans have not returned.
