Bloom : 3 big things hitters do ..

Post by ramfandan »

.. Chaim Bloom simplifies in his answer to Rand Karriker in interview

1. What are they swinging at ?
2. How often do they hit it ?
3. What happens when they do ?

So swing decisions , contact, and damage are the things .

According to Bloom , if you do all 3 at an elite level , you will be an elite player
If you do 2 of the 3 , you'll probably play for a long time and put your kids and their kids thru college..(lol )
if you do only 1 of the 3 , you better do something on the other side of the ball or you will have a very short career

Go to the 9:10 time stamp on this video for that answer

Here is the Karraker /Bloom video link : 19 min. 22 sec total

Not going to listen, but if Bloom actually said that [shirt], he is not Captain Obvious, he is 5* General Obvious.

Thanks for the post Dan. But, wait a minute. Let me make sure I’ve got this straight. The Cards POBO has an opinion about effective MLB hitting? And he expressed that opinion in a straightforward and concise way? This new fangled type of communication is going to take some getting used to. I’m familiar with the Cards old POBO rambling on and on about not much and never really making a point.

Yes, it may be obvious but at least it isn't a diatribe about exit velocity, launch angle, and swing speed. It's a concise, relatable, even simplistic take on hitting....I find it refreshing.

I would assert those 3 are not equal. What happens when a player swings is more important.

So, which STL hitters achieve good outcomes in all 3? And which achieve good outcomes in 2?

Good question. Who has the best nonchase rate. Who hits the ball more often. Where does it go when hit.

Nado hits the ball often; up in the air on the infield. So contact rate alone won’t get it.

Seems pretty clear he’s telegraphing that Gorman and Walker will be traded…..

I listened to that over the weekend RF.

Nice to hear a POBO who has a clue! :D

Gorman seems to have two of the three traits - 1 and 3.

Not my opinion but if you base the criteria expressed by Bloom, the Cardinals would have ZERO players who excel at all 3.
Those players are perennial all Star types..
For 2 of the 3 , my guess would be Bloom May put Donovan as he can recognize good pitches, make contact well, his 3rd category Damage is not elite.. good in doubles, hitting to all fields but not elite as lacks power to hit a lot of homers.
That’s about it.

Poor pitch selection, very poor contact, power when he’s lucky enough to get the low middle in pitch….. I don’t think that cuts it

He’s 50th percentile in chase rate and 85th percentile in walk rate. His pitch selection certainly isn’t “poor”.

You obviously haven't been watching him play the past few years.
