1988 Rookie of the Year. How can you not hire him?

He might be a good manager, but why is everyone so eager to praise this as such a great move? He never won more than 75 games as a manager his first time around.

Because he's experienced in a variety of baseball roles, he's known as a steady boss, and he has a history with the Braves. The fact his Rockies teams didn't win just means they weren't very good. Check out Stengel's career arc sometime.why is everyone so eager to praise this as such a great move? He never won more than 75 games as a manager
From a Braves site:
During his 14 seasons, he played for Tony La Russa, Renee Lachemann Don Baylor and Bobby Cox, who combined to managed 12,199 regular season big league games, not to mentioned the close to 1,200 games Weiss had on the bench with Atlanta.

Pretty weak competition.
But he was the starting shortstop for the 1988 Oakland A's juggernaut (that should have won the WS that year), and that was probably a factor.
Re: Braves name Walt Weiss as Manager
He got points just for being on the A’s, but there probably shouldn’t have been a winner that year. ‘87 and ‘89 were pretty loaded though.ZouMiz2424 wrote: ↑04 Nov 2025 10:48 amHow bad was the 1988 rookies? He won ROY by hitting .250 with a .633 ops....
Re: Braves name Walt Weiss as Manager
I suspect most folks who are knowledgeable about this game would not draw much importance from a .437 winning percentage with the Rockies.Strummer Jones wrote: ↑03 Nov 2025 18:23 pmA guy with a .437 winning percentage?
I'm just gonna pretend you're being sarcastic.

He was in Colorado. Throw out those numbers. Did Snitker no longer want to manage or was he removed to another position?Strummer Jones wrote: ↑03 Nov 2025 18:23 pmA guy with a .437 winning percentage?

He is also 7th out of the 8 managers they've had in winning percentage And the guy in last place was hired in the middle of last season after Bud Black got fired.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑04 Nov 2025 21:07 pmHe was in Colorado. Sorry, but if the Cardinals signed a manager who did that badly, wherever they managed, would get ripped apart here.

And by that rationale, Marmol is a fantastic manager, because his winning percentage, despite a horrific '23 and a slightly less horrific '25, is still over .500.
And literally nobody can argue that either of those teams was built to win anything.
I'm not saying that Marmol is the next LaRussa, but the abject absurdity of those of us wanting to hire Walt Friggin' Weiss is...something.
