Bases loaded, force out at home.

Post by Melville »

Allow me to make a point which I have not seen or heard anyone else make (naturally).
The Blue Jays would have won the World Series if they had understood the perfect point I am about to make.
There was no need for Kiner-Falefa to slide into home.
Sliding is proven to be slower than running through a base.
Players only need to slide on tag plays or to avoid over-running a base.
Neither applied in that moment.
If Kiner-Falefa runs through home plate, and does not slow himself by sliding, he would have been clearly safe on that play.
And any replay review would have been far more precise.
No excuse for the mistake he made.
It is something he and the 3b coach should have discussed.
Obviously, they did not.
Foolish mistake.
Had I been the 3b coach, it would have been explained to the runner well in advance and there would have been no slide.
And he would have been safe.
And the Blue Jay would be exhausted this morning from celebrating last night.

But thanks to that mistake, the Dodgers were able to two the World Series.

You make a good point. I wish he had run thru so we would know. But as it is, we shall only debate.

Too bad #20 didn't slide in the 1968 World Series or the Cardinals may have had 12 flags flying over Busch Stadium.

sometimes sliding is better - why don't you talk about things you know - like should I get delivery or go to the drive-thru ?

Was just about to post the same thing. Here is video - it’s poor awareness from the player and an absentee 3rd base coach not having him ready.

Not surprisingly, there is a legion of posts about IKF's several blunders on this play, including ones saying he could have run through rather than sliding. So no, it's not an original thought.

The much bigger issue was his minuscule lead at 3B and an even poorer secondary lead after the pitch was released. Inexcusable. This is shown in the links below (where they also question his slide).

That was the huge mistake. Where was the 3rd base coach?? But on the other hand, if the ball had been fielded quickly and thrown quicker the play would have had the same result being out at home. Baseball has always been a game of inches.

I pointed this out last night in a thread way before you ever thought about it. Made the comment to my friends in text as soon as it happened. Betts also slid at home on force as well but probably still would be out. It was in the thread ..one of the greatest game sevens ever.

The runner is flatfooted and only a couple steps off 3rd base when the pitcher is in his windup and stays there even after the pitch!

He should've been dancing 15+ feet down the line at windup, guy blew.

Yeah, I could see that. But in the heat of the moment I can understand it.
That is what coaches are for.
Falefa, being regularly used as a PR, should have known better than to slide.
But there is zero excuse for the coach not coaching him in advance on that point.
Avoiding stupid blunders in the heat of the moment is why the coaching profession exists to begin with.
If both the runner and the coach do their job, the Blue Jays are planning a parade right now.
