OT: Trouble in Cajun Country

Post by edwin drood »

The Louisiana governor says the LSU AD will NOT select the next head football coach. At issue: $130 million in buyouts due the last 2 coaches.

Sounds like a fair request considering how the last two choices have worked out.

Why was Kelly fired only after a meeting at the governor’s mansion?

Normally the decision to hire and fire taken from an AD would be alarming.

But HC for the football team, especially at LSU, is the highest paid state employee by far. It’s fiscally responsible to do everything possible to make sure it’s a great hire and they stop hemorrhaging money. In other words it’s much bigger than the AD.

He is a good governor and great politician as the Folks are totally behind this as they have zero confidence in this clueless AD who has the two worst buyouts in CFB and chose poorly for fits for each personality. Kelly especially awful as he was pure Yankee with no championships and was merely a Name HC. Never fit in the culture of region.

huge winning issue for him.

I know he has a lot of money to play with at Oregon but forget Lane Kiffin who everyone wants but little reason to leave Oxford, go after Dan Lanning who is part of the Saban lineage and a successful coach with SEC background. Make HIM say no and likely the best fit for a SEC traditional power.

They need to lower their expectations.

Alabama, Georgia, A&M are their superiors, Texas has big money and will buy its way back to prominence. You too Gators, face reality.

Instead of showing 'strategic patience' with Kelly, LSU's drama queen AD Woodward fired him. It almost seems like Kelly outsmarted them all and wanted to be fired to get away from the LSU sheet show. Kelly was recruiting well and needed to be managed, not fired. MU could have easily fired Drink after the first few years, but chose strategic patience instead which has paid off.

Strategic patience might play at some places but Kelly was in year four at LSU and going backwards. Fans were hyper-(upset) and ready to show him the door, which was evident if you watched the reaction during and after the TAMU beat-down that emptied the stadium.

My understanding of later events is Kelly met with his AD Sunday who demanded he fire his OC. Kelly balked, voices were raised and tables pounded, and Kelly left the meeting without a job. Then the gov, who appears to think a lot with his mouth, jumped in and made the situation really unappealing for their next hire. Meanwhile Kelly walked with $54M worth of condolences and is probably pricing yachts with Jimbo Fisher this weekend.
