I dont have all the fancy lingo but both would not be eligible to join STL until after their junior season is over. Then they can sign.

Wasnt J Carb already signed to his ELC?

I believe that the Blues could promote any player that has signed an ELC. They have to meet an age requirement to go to the AHL though if they are not Euros

Carbonneau and Jiricek have both signed their elc’s but neither can play for the Blues this season until after their junior seasons are finished. It’s not like the ahl. Once you’ve sent someone to their junior team they play there until the season is over.

i dont understand why would the opt to send them to the junior team as straight to the AHL. Seems like they both need more of a challenging league?

Jiricek was injured for most of the last 2 years. It would have been a disaster to send him to the ahl and have him get hurt again because he wasn’t ready to be there.

I don’t think Carbonneau is eligible for the ahl this year. There is some sort of an agreement between the nhl and Canadian juniors where teenagers are able to play in the nhl if they make the team but they are not able to play in the ahl. They want their stars in their league if they aren’t in the nhl.

I heard he could have gone the college route? That rule seems so stupid! Oh if you cant make the NHL squad you have to play for the juior team unless you choose college. I think it should be up to the player and NHL team!

It was up to the player and the NHL team. Carb expressed that he wanted to return to his junior team and the Blues supported his decision.

If he had gone to college he would also have had to stay there for the rest of the season. I’m just guessing here, but I think he chose to go back to junior so he could come to camp this year and try to make the team.

Guess my point is he was deserving of a spot.

Neither Carbonneau nor Jiricek was deserving of a spot then or right now.

I just watched the replay of Carbo's game from yesterday, they took a reg loss against Halifax despite outplaying them. Carbo scored a couple. An offensive force. He had many other scoring chances and shot attempts. But he still needs roundedness to his two way game. Halifax' first goal (opened the scoring) came when Carbs forced a pass that was not the smartest offensive play, he just thought he could get away with it, and it was blocked and quickly went the other way for a goal. He is not structured defensively well enough to be thrown to the dogs.

Jiricek, I also watched his game yesterday afternoon, he also had a multipoint game but he is not ready for NHL duty either. In the last couple years he's only had about 38 regular season games and the WJC. He is really picking it up physically which is fantastic to see. But he needs a full year of this.

Some people react to adversity by coming up with terrible ideas to make it worse. That's what's going on with all the people who don't watch these prospects demanding they play now and who cares if that ruins them. There is no ability to hold your mud

I would add that both of Jiricek and Carbonneau are playing on high end junior teams that are going to have deep playoff runs this year, which is very good for them.

I'm am not an expert, so someone may have better answer...But signing them doesn't change how many years they may have until they become RFA. If he gets sent to AHL, then the clock starts ticking. (Again, I am not fully up to speed on the AHL restrictions for teenagers.) If he remains unsigned, and for some reason it takes awhile as a college amateur, after 3 years, if he is unsigned, then he can become a free agent. (Last Spring some were hand-wringing that was Snuggerud's plan.) College cannot take a pro signed player. The CHL Juniors have different arrangements with NHL.
