Jose Fermin
Ok, I’m completely ready to get blasted here, but I’ve got an honest question about Jose.
Here are his combined stats at Memphis the last two years.
G. AB RS H 2B 3B HR RBI SB BB SO HBP .AVG OB%
126 433 87 132 36 0 15 67 38 79 47 15 .305 .429
I’m not very thrilled about his defense, but he does play at least average defense at several positions. What did surprise me was his strike out to walk ratio, and his number of runs scored! He has above average speed and runs the bases well. His splits indicate that he hits both left and right handed pitching, but does hit lefties better. Which the Cardinals really need.
So, my question, why isn’t he taken more seriously? He didn’t hit well in 2022, or 2023, but has been really good the last two years.
The Cardinals need more team speed and someone who hits left handed pitching well, he checks both boxes.
Ok blast away!

No blasting but they probably view him the same way as a lot of other utility players are viewed they can be solid when used sparingly or occasional fill in for injuries but if they play everyday they will be exposedHoosier59 wrote: ↑21 Oct 2025 15:06 pm Ok, I’m completely ready to get blasted here, but I’ve got an honest question about Jose.

Re: Jose Fermin
With the Cardinals crowded infield and their desparate need for a RH outfield bat or two, he should be reminding them that he has played some OF in his history.
OF against LHP (Beware: this may be frightening; read at your own risk)
.691 Nootbar
.677 Walker
.651 Donovan
.606 Burleson
.527 Scott
.509 Church
Sadly, I believe Fermin actually hits RHP better than he hits LHP, so he might as well be a LH bat, too.
Baez: Come quickly!
Zach Levenson?

Even if they deal Arenado he’ll likely be blocked by Winn/JJ/Donovan/Gorman/Saggese.
If however Gorman is dealt and/or Donovan winds up in LF Fermin would be a nice fit.

Re: Jose Fermin
Fermin is quite serviceable as a utility player.
Re: Jose Fermin
I just like the fact that he draws a lot of walks, seldom strikes out, and has hit for a good average at least at AAA, and for the Cards last season in a small sample size.
If Oli would allow JJ and Scott free rein to steal bases, Fermin might make a good #2 hitter. He takes pitches and can hit to opposite field. Maybe things will be different under Bloom, but under Mo, Fermin wasnt given much consideration.

Hoosier, I totally agree that Fermin should get a look. He cant be any worse than some of the yahoos they've thrown out there the last couple years.

Fermin has been type-casted as a utility player. The Cardinals, like many organizations, don't give certain players chances simply because they weren't high draft picks or have the prospect pedigree. This is unfortunate. We get to see the likes of Carlson, Gorman, Walker fail for years and years at the big league level, while other players who have earned a promotion and a real shot, basically get none.
This isn't saying that Fermin would be any good given regular playing time, but he hasn't been given a REAL opportunity. Same for guys like Arozarena, Adolis Garcia, Luken Baker, and guys like Bryan Torres who is currently in AAA.

Re: Jose Fermin
This is a good write. The fact the he and others were not played or seen as vitals, is indeed an organization issue. That can certainly be traced.Cardinals4Life wrote: ↑22 Oct 2025 01:28 amHoosier59 wrote: ↑21 Oct 2025 15:06 pm Ok, I’m completely ready to get blasted here, but I’ve got an honest question about Jose.

New blood should solve that bad practice.

Re: Jose Fermin
Work, work, work on defense he be fine for us.
Re: Jose Fermin
I agree he’s not a bad utility player but I think he’s blocked from getting very much playing time. Hypothetically even if Arenado and Donovan are traded this winter Fermin is still probably going to be blocked somewhat by-
C Herrera Pages Crooks
1B WC
2B JW
SS Wynn
3B Gorman
Utility Saggese
Saggese is younger and better defensively at SS than Fermin so he will get most of the infield back up reps imo.

Re: Jose Fermin
IF seems pretty crowded. Fermin could help himself by working out in LF/RF over the winter. Learn to be a decent OF that could help the puny stats against LHP and give him a path to some semi regular PT.

Re: Jose Fermin
LoL...45 games last year and Fermin is being unfairly treated due to lack of draft status but ignore his prior 51 MLB games.
Players can be hot or good for such a small sample size...then the league rises up and says, no, we've figured you out.
I'm not saying to not give him fair opportunity, but let's temper the gloss

Hit .283 in 30 games in MLB 2025. Probably has to do with launch angle or something. Analytics computer doesn't like him.
