Great series in the ALCS. Really fun to watch.

This is not a complaint and is much more a question. How does Kevin Gausman get to tap his feet like he does before he throws a pitch? He looks like Patrick Cantlay trying to get comfortable before a putt. I counted anywhere from 3 to 8 taps before a pitch. Obviously it's not a rules violation because he never gets called for a balk but it looks like he stops, starts, stops starts etc.

I may be entirely wrong on this but doesn’t it sort of work case by case to an extent where a pitcher is allowed to have his little “quirks” so long as he doesn’t veer off or deviate from it in anyway? And something made aware to umpires like this is how he does things so that there isn’t any issues during the game

Clevinger used to rock back and forth about six or seven times before delivering the ball with nobody on base. And he still sucked.

But if umpires rule that you beat the clock once you start your motion, what is to stop any pitcher from rocking back and forth as many times as he wants before delivering the ball?

I remember a Game of the Week back in 1973 and Nolan Ryan was pitching in Yankee Stadium. He did the same thing stepping off the rubber, and Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek were discussing whether it was a balk or not. Thanks for digging up an old memory for me!
