I've watched hockey since the early 90's and honestly hadn't thought of it this way. It's a great point. The original poster makes a good point as well. I saw some of the game and all the 3rd and I didn't see that many hits.

Hits are no longer an important stat. I mean, Faulk is usually near the top when it comes to hits, but his hits are the equivalent of singles in baseball. It’s no longer the 70’s and 80’s where physical play was measured in hits and fights. Now it’s determined by how strong you are along the boards, in the corners, and behind and in front of the net. Can you take the puck away from the other team and keep it or retrieve the puck and not let them take it from you. That remains a weakness for this team. When all five players are forced below the dots to play defense because your defense can’t get the puck or keep it away from the other team, you are in an endless cycle of chip and change. That’s right, I said change, NOT chase. By the time you get the puck, providing they haven’t scored, it’s time for you to change.
