I think that losing Vlady
would have cost more money than
keeping him.

Re: Vlady...
Personally think Vlad is a bit overrated. Very good player, though. And Go Mariners!
Re: Vlady...
He's as good of a contract as any of the mega contracts, JMO.
Injury can always kill that statement. He's a 3B/1B a bit less prone to such injuries vs a player like
Trout or Turner.
I look at it a bit different sometimes. What Vladdy brings to that organization vs him going elsewhere?
They stay legit for those 7-8 years that you mention, and the team is more attractive to other players
to want to join them. Toronto isn't exactly LA or NY where one guy goes, they get another. It's closer to when
Albert left a very strong baseball city. Toronto has Canadian taxes. St. Louis lacks the bright lights.
Along the way of those 7-8 years maybe they get someone to carry his torch forward and
Vladdy will become overpriced player to his production. IF able to be productive it's fine. Even if not he still
brings legitimacy to the organization for a number of seasons and pays a large portion of that wage.
If he left, Toronto may have chased a player in an attempt to find what Vladdy brings to Toronto, as St. Louis did
to some extent with Beltran. St. Louis saved what $10/year and at that time could have done both and still
had a payroll under $140 million with 3.4 million or more fans, a ring maybe.
Nats lost Soto for as good of a haul as reasonable to expect. Received Abrams, Gore, Wood, Hassell. Fantastic return.
They have a great nucleus now along with other dumps they did (Turner, Scherzer) and will still be challenged to put it all together after the 2022 trade before that new window that they bought with Soto closes. This is a far greater return than
the Cards will sniff as everyone knows for any Cardinal.
