Gibson was the better athlete, better pitcher and better defender. If allowed to focus on hitting and with modern training who knows. Gibson was used frequently as a ph in 1970 with 109 at bats and hit .303. He may not have had the power of Ohtani but to laugh it off is naive.

Laugh all you want but the facts are Gibby hit over .300 one year with over 100 at bats while not playing everyday as a hitter while only focusing on pitching. That there shows he had the hitting ability. If they had the DH back then he may have been given the opportunity that Ohtani has been given and no one can say he could not have come close to Ohtani. Like I said he didn’t have the power of Ohtani but showed that he had the hitting ability given the opportunity and the speed to steal bases. Gibson was a great athlete and had the ability and determination to be great at whatever he put his mind to.
I’m not denigrating Ohtani, I love watching him play and respect what he has done but times are different now then prior and there have been players in the past that may have approached what he has done under different circumstances. He’s an outlier but not that much of one to be far and above all others before.

He has just 9 hits in 10 games.

That was a. All-time game last night but the other 9 games have not been much at all. One game in series gave him MVP honors.

He set a record last night by reaching base all 9 times he came to the plate in a postseason game, and the first to do that in any MLB game since 1922. He also tied a 119 year old record by getting 4 extra base hits in a WS game.

Regardless of what you think about the contract, deferral of cost ,etc. his signing might be the best deal ever signed from a business and revenue standpoint. Both for the Dodgers and MLB.
