Your Favorite NON STAR Cardinal?

Post by Adam2 »

Who is your favorite non star, scrub, bench guy, forgotten number 5 pitcher in Cardinals history?

Mine is Felix Jose. At the time we had a foreign exchange student from Honduras living with us. She thought Jose was cute so she had his cards and a poster in her room, so as a family we cheered for him

Can Andy Van Slyke count. Or Ray.

Kenny Oberkfell, who went to Collinsville High School, about 15 miles from my hometown. He was undrafted out of high school and went to Belleville Area College(now SWIC) where he hit .400 in the spring of 1975 and was named to the first-team squad of the NJCAA All-America team. On May 4, 1975 – his 19th birthday – Oberkfell signed with the Cardinals as an amateur free agent about 48 hours after his final game with Belleville Area College.

I'd say that's pushing it. Granted Van Slyke wasn't an all-star until after he left the Cardinals, he was still a 3x all-star.

I thought about Ray myself. He made one all-star game and was far from a scrub or bench player (until his return to the Cardinals in 2004, one of the reasons that is my favorite team ever).

Good choice. Herzog once said Oberkfell was a player who didn't need coached.

But he attended Highland High School. And played college baseball at the University of Southern California (USC).

Are we talking about the same player?

I made it a point to answer this question without looking at others' answers...

1. Bob Tewksbury
2. Bernard Gilkey
3. Pags
4. So Taguchi (he maybe #1 for me).
5. Pedro Guerrero
6. Gregg Jefferies.

I probably have more...

Taguchi was the best, dude loved to play the game, and was always working hard and smiling.

Jose Oquendo? Dude was everywhere, and seemed to never do anything great, but a lot of things well enough.

Steve Kline? He seemed to be a little crazy but always got guys out.

John Tudor seemed unhittable for a minute there.

Gilkey had some terrific seasons, and was always underrated.

Ozzie Canseco? :P
