Shildt was responding to the Union-Tribune on Tuesday regarding questions about his management style based on the complaints of a number of people who worked with him the past two years.
Nearly 20 sources — 12 of them who worked with Shildt on a daily basis during the season — have in recent months characterized Shildt as unyieldingly demanding of his coaching staff and the team’s support staff and as having a tendency to micromanage and possessing a quick temper that is easily triggered by questioning or feedback.

The issues that surfaced in San Diego were virtually identical to the issues that several league sources said led to Shildt’s abrupt dismissal in St. Louis following a 90-win season in 2021 and three playoff appearances in three seasons.
Shildt acknowledged Tuesday that the things he was hearing were “eerily similar in the two places I’ve managed.”
The Cardinals have only ever said publicly that Shildt was fired due to “philosophical differences.” A half-dozen sources, including current and former members of the Cardinals organization and two people who were part of front offices that considered interviewing Shildt in the month after he was fired, said some Cardinals coaches and others threatened to quit if Shildt remained.
That did not occur in San Diego, though multiple coaches indicated they would leave if they found opportunities elsewhere.
.....
Throughout this season, people in the organization said, tensions rose as Shildt became more demanding and seemingly entrenched in his beliefs about how the team should be run.
As the Padres continued to win, sources said, those below and above Shildt were reluctant to push for his ouster or even complain too vociferously. However, it remained a persistent topic among many of them even as they also sought to remain focused on their jobs.
Some coaches also resigned themselves to simply surviving because there is not an abundance of major league opportunities. Multiple coaches said they wanted to win and felt the Padres afforded that chance and they wanted to be part of the realization of a goal. They also said their love for the players kept them around.
The Padres enlisted people internally to work with Shildt regarding his penchant to snap at colleagues and even superiors who he perceived were questioning him, according to multiple sources. The plan for the offseason was for there to be more discussions and work done regarding his interactions with staff and media.
.....
Many in the organization spoke over the past several months of repeated angry outbursts and what were painted as unproductive and destructive communication tactics. Shildt often made employees feel silly for suggestions or what they deemed helpful information, but he then would sometimes complain that they had not prepared him for situations.
Some veteran coaches lamented that the coaches lower on the totem pole bore the brunt of Shildt’s vexation.

Re: Shildty Fired!
He retired with having made the playoffs every year of his career in which he started the season as the Manager. Tough to beat.

(Mo's a moron, we all know that, but he was still Shildt's boss and you don't threaten the boss)

Re: Shildty Fired!
Sounds like the same thing that got him fired from the Cardinals. Guess he's not willing to consider it's a "him" problem.
Re: Shildty Fired!
Sounds like a mutiny more than anything. In both situations.

Re: Shildty Fired!
I heard his interview on Sirius XM today, and when asked about it he went on a -- I kid you not - 10-minute diatribe about how baseball organizations work and in the final minute basically said "no one gets along with everyone." It was crazy.

I still haven’t seen anything that suggests he was fired or even pushed out. All reports indicate it was Shildt’s decision. So I’m curious why you’re convinced that you’re right.

Bernie's podcast on Shildt

Refers to Kevin Acee story in San Diego . Sounds like if you are a coach under him , you better think twice before giving input to him on your own ideas. Shildt takes that as questioning him etc.

Re: Shildty Fired!
I could have made the playoffs coaching the Padres. Look at the lineup and the pitching.
2019 - three guys who averaged over 30 HRs - got destroyed by the Nats in NLDS
2020 = 30-28 record and lost right away in WC.
2021- Cards had the best WAR for OF in the league the one year DC. TON and Bader all played great. Goldy and Arenado. Dumb moves in getting bounced in WC game
When you look deeper, he's succeeded with good teams and taken them nowhere in the playoffs.
More than that -- when you're a manager, or any boss, you must get along with both the front office and staff.
Re: Shildty Fired!
All I said was he made the playoffs every season he was a Manager. You can qualify it however you want, but that doesn't take away the fact that's what he did. I don't know how many Managers, if any, can claim that.ClassicO wrote: ↑16 Oct 2025 08:01 amI could have made the playoffs coaching the Padres. Look at the lineup and the pitching.

The Mets were stacked this year. How'd they do? The Yankees are stacked every year and haven't won a WS since 2009. The Phillies are loaded as well and haven't won since '08.
BTW, the 2019-2021 Cardinals rosters weren't all that impressive.
2019 - One All-Star, 3 guys with an OPS+ over 100, 4 if you want to count Edman. Flaherty was great, Hudson was good though a rookie who walked too many. 3/5 of their rotation was garbage with Wainwright, Mikolas and Wacha
2020 - Brad Miller was the second best hitter on the team. Literally. Weird season, throw it out for all I care.
2021 - Offense was much better, but the pitching was a mess. They had two guys throw more than 100 innings. Carlos Martinez was third on the team in starts with 16.
The Padres have had suspensions and injuries to their best players that drastically handcuffed Shildt. He was rarely playing with a full deck.
Now, it appears his approach with players and coaches was completely unacceptable and indefensible. If that's how it was in STL, then Mo had no choice but to do what he did.
Re: Shildty Fired!
NO ONE calls him big game Mikey that's for sure!
Re: Shildty Fired!
Sounds like he had an uncontrollable, hair temper and verbally abused some coaches and other Cardinal employees. Did the same thing in San Diego. Toxic. That clubhouse video sure showed the other side of him.
