Re: ROR
I will always remember when ROR won the Conn Smythe and delivered us our first Stanley Cup. ROR was the driving force along with Binner, Chief and Parayko.

Last year, Preds surrendered 24 ENG. That number gets out of whack because since they are losing they pull the goalie a lot. That ends up in a lot of empty net goals. I've always thought that they needed to not count the the +/- when the goalie is pulled. I think it would make it more accurate.
I haven't watched ROR play this year or much last year. He was always an oddity of a player. Not fast, but effective. It's not hard to imagine losing a step could drastically reduce his ability to make a difference. He won a cup here and should always be respected.
As for a change to +/- calculation, a penalized player whose team gives up a SHG should have a minus.

Re: ROR
I'll always love Ryan O'Reilly.
I have his jersey. He was a solid captain here. And....I'll never forget 2019.
But he's 34 and it's time to move on and look toward the future.

Agree on all of that (except I don't have an ROR jersey.)dtkblueshockey wrote: ↑15 Oct 2025 08:26 am I'll always love Ryan O'Reilly.

Of the 20 players who suited for ROR's last game with Blues, only 10 played for the team in Monday's game.

Yeah that is a good point about the ENGTony Palazzolo wrote: ↑15 Oct 2025 07:23 amThe one area that +/- is weak as a stat is on losing teams. And here's something else that's crazy to think about: As a person ages, their ability to perform athletically decreases. It's the craziest phenomenon, but must be true, at least for hockey, because we see very few players in their 40's in the NHL, and no players in their 50's, 60's and beyond competing.

Re: ROR
This thread might be kinda like when assogg starts a thread about DA.
Re: ROR
O'Reilly set the work ethic bar all the complacent, selfish long-time Blues had to match.dtkblueshockey wrote: ↑15 Oct 2025 08:26 am I'll always love Ryan O'Reilly.

If not for O'Reilly the Blues don't sniff the Cup in 2019. These facts unsettle some, still. Sad but true.

You think dumb dumb can comprehend that?SRV1990 wrote: ↑15 Oct 2025 09:25 amSame!dtkblueshockey wrote: ↑15 Oct 2025 08:26 am I'll always love Ryan O'Reilly.

Also while I loved him as a Blue and the cup is unforgettable
I couldnt care less if he was -300 in 4 games this year while playing 2 mins a game, hes not on the Blues, in fact hes on a team I cant stand so...
Dumb dumb acts we all get sad when former Blues dont help opposing teams...especially the Preds...very bizarre.

Re: ROR
forgive me if I'm wrong because I started on page 2. Is this a thread honoring the best player on the best Blues team of all time that won a Stanley Cup? Pretty cool to have a thread all these years later talking about the guy that was the driving force along with Binner to changing the trajectory of the oldest franchise without a cup win.
I hope they do something for ROR in retirement, but him having the Conn Smythe and being welcome back anytime will probably be enough.

Re: ROR
He was great for the Blues while he was here and that's what I care about. For a player who wasn't particularly fast or physical he was always a pest on the forecheck and extremely difficult for other players to play their best against. Not surprising as age has probably slowed him down more that he's not able to play at that level against younger faster players.

Re: ROR
I still don't understand what happened to ROR his last season (well... half-season) that he was here. He had to have been injured, right?
Because he was the worst player on the ice the majority of that last stretch. If he was indeed hurt, I'll never understand why guys do this to themselves. I fully understand wanting to be a team player and be out there, but if you're that hurt that you're the worst player on the ice instead of one of the best, just can't fathom wanting to play through that.

Re: ROR
The vast majority of us can't comprehend what it takes to get to the top level of a particular sport, especially hockey (but certainly true for football, baseball, etc.). The desire and competitive nature one must possess, along with ability, is not something many people have. All sports are littered with people who had/have exceptional ability, but lack the desire, commitment and competitiveness. For buys like O'Reilly, and the many others who played past their "prime", it's that level of compete I believe keeps them playing when perhaps they shouldn't. Not justifying it, rather addressing your comment about why some do it.blackinkbiz wrote: ↑15 Oct 2025 11:00 am I still don't understand what happened to ROR his last season (well... half-season) that he was here.
