...Oct 14th was Columbus Day in 1985, and a federal holiday. Ordinarily I would have been working on a Monday, but I was home, watching the NLDS game on TV. I was pleasantly SHOCKED at what Ozzie did, giving the Cards a walkoff win over the Dodgers.

That was a classic HR in a division series, but I think what David Freeze did in game 6 of the 2011 WS for pure drama made it one of the greatest post-season games in WS history. But that is an account for another thread.

...Good for you, Gob... Sadly I probably won't be around to post then, as I'll turn 85 years old this Thursday, God willing. I would be 111 years old then, and according to insurance longevity statistics less than 10 people out of 100,000 live to be older than 110 years old. So, I guess there IS a chance, probably about the same chance of Freese's walkoff in game 6...

Out of school for Columbus Day. Watching the game at my grandparents. What a day, what a year!

I had to make a choice of leaving my TV to go to a church board meeting after the 7th inning or skip the meeting to watch the end. My wife said if you go you might just influence the Good Lord to bless the Cardinals. Or if you stay bless the Dodgers. I went to the meeting dying the whole time. She said she would watch and let me know what happened.
The meeting ended around dusk down here in Jacksonville and as I tried to pick up KMOX, couldn’t get it to come in clearly. There was a bunch of static but I could hear Jacks voice screaming but could not make out what he was saying.
I pulled into my driveway and my wife and 3 year old twins came running out to greet me screaming “The Cardinals won!” My wife explained that as she was watching with the kids playing on the floor, some guy named Ozzie (her father’s name) came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. She said to the twins, “Everybody touch something red to bring Daddy’s Cardinals luck so he’ll be happy when he gets home.” Needless to say, I was happy thanks to God and my family. lol
If only I had kept my wife and babies up for Game 6 of the World Series that year.

Rushing home from 5th grade to see the game. My favorite Cardinal players and my favorite Cardinal teams were from ''82-'87. TV clarity wasn't nearly what it is today, and I couldn't tell if the ball went off the wall or off the concrete support above the wall. I was screaming RUN...GO... as I thought it was off the wall. Great memories.

I was there with a client -- but we were WAY up high in old Busch. I wasn't sure it was a HR because they threw it into Duncan - but when Duncan didn't tag him I knew.

I was listening to the game from my office in DFW. My roommate called and said he and some of our friends had blown out of work early to watch the game at our apartment. I was 30 minutes away so I headed out. I was at the stoplight to my apartmen's parking lot listening to the game on the radio when Ozzie hit his home run. 5 minutes later I got home and everyone was still jumping around. (drat), missed it.


The funny thing is that the same thing happened with Game 6 and Clark's HR. Roommate gathered the guys and called me. I drove home. And I was sitting at that same damned red light when Clark hit his home run.

I was talking on the phone to my boss when Clark hit the HR. He had let me leave to go home and watch the game. He thought I was going to have a stroke after Clark’s blast. Oh, he was a Dodger fan from LA, too.

Also after school in fifth grade. There was a rain delay and the HR didnt happen until about 5:45, so I must have seen a lot of the game. I just watched it in full on youtube - highly recommended

In exactly 10 days, I was celebrating my 21st birthday in Harpo's in Columbia MO when we had the most infamous day/call in Cardinals and WS history. Where I was 40 years ago from today, I have no idea.

I was in an airport lounge at O’Hare in Chicago with my 11 month old son in my arms. I was waiting for a flight to St. Louis to visit my parents. I’ll never forget it.
