Lane Hutson - 8 yrs @ $8.85m

Post by TruBlueFan_1970 »

Rookie of the year and 66 points (6g, 60a) last season and he earns big bank. I know there was some discussion about Broberg getting $9-10m on his next deal. No way that happens with this deal. Still hoping to get Bro in the $7.5m range if he has a good season.

Broberg is bigger and better defensively; he'll get 8 (minimum).

IMO Broberg based on last season and his skillset is probably in the 8M range. if he really pops off sure a 9M might happen, if he gets hurt or plays more mediocre 7M might happen.

I'm not super worried about exactly where his number falls tbh, just assuming he'll be paid what he is worth and i'd like to see the deal happen.

8x8 is most likely.

Holloway is the one that will be difficult to determine.

I think Rutherford has him getting 11.5 a year and all I can think is you must be out of your mind.

Dom has him in the 7.5, which I think is likely where he ends up, unless he goes completely crazy this year.

Big thing is though you want to get it done before the new CBA settles in and you can only do 7 years.

Had Hutson taken the Habs to the cleaners, other young defensemen coming up could have used his deal as a comparable. That won’t be the case now. And because of Hutson, other clubs can wield leverage over their up-and-coming blueliners.

Think about Thomas Harley in Dallas, Simon Edvinsson in Detroit, Philip Broberg in St. Louis, or Brandt Clarke in Los Angeles. These future RFAs won’t have the leverage to say, “Hey, Hutson got $10 million, so I can come in around $7 million or $8 million.”

Future contracts for pending RFA defensemen will come in much lower than anticipated. All because Hutson and the Canadiens worked out a deal favorable for both sides.
