How quickly can Matt Pierpont develop Liam Doyle to majors ?

Post by ramfandan »

Pierpont was Seattle's Pitching Coordinator prior to Bloom hiring him as Director of Pitching for the Cardinals .
How quickly Doyle gets to the Cardinals major league roster may be an indicator of the new Cardinals development team .. at least on the pitching side of things.
Something I will keep an eye on for 2026 as Doyle pitches in Memphis .

Seattle has done a great job drafting & developing pitching.

Pierpont looks like another great hire by Bloom.

From what I know Bloom doesn't like to rush young starters to big leagues until they're fully ready.

But given Doyle was a college pitcher and not a H.S. pick, I'd say there's a good chance we see him late 2026 if he's having success and moving up quickly through the system.

I don't it's just young starters, what I took was that he thought it was better to give players a little more time in the minors rather then rushing them, Makes me think Walker has a ticket to AAA next spring.

I'm excited for Doyle...but I'd rather see him start in Springfield next year. Then Memphis by June/July if he's just woodchipping guys there. And if that continues at Memphis, then bring him to STL in late August or so.

He needs enough time to fully develop those secondary pitches. See in the starting rotation in the spring of 2027 (if there is baseball)

how quickly can he develop a player? Well that depends on the player. And you have to wait and see how they respond to really good opposition. AA will offer a good test, then AAA will really offer a good test..

The player in question needs to get north of 100 innings in a season...something he's never done in a continuous effort (5-6 straight months). He reached 99 innings total last season, 95 with Tenn., almost 4 innings with St. Louis farm after nearly 2 month break.

And lastly...when the said player is ready. His off-speed offerings hang in the upper part the zone too much...and are crushed. He's not ready.

But especially pitchers, I think he's fine w/JJW starting at 2nd base on OD in 2026.........he's more than ready.

I've been saying for months now that I'd start Walker at Memphis in 2026 and keep him there the entire season (Gorman too unless both NADO & Donny are dealt and he's needed at 3rd base).

Agreed on JJ. I really don't know what he has left to prove. He's been a dude at every level.

Honestly he should've been up here in June/July, he's a better hitter than anyone on this team not named I. Hererra or WillyC.

I have to agree with you on all points. On Gorman & Walker, Cards couldn't get enough from trading them to outweigh their value if they finally develop, unlikely tho that may be.

Thx Okie

And agree, dealing Walker and/or Gorman now likely nets Bloom nothing of value.

not true - many teams would give JW or Norman a shot / I think it's time to cut bait

You're living in dreamland if you think Walker and/or Gorman would net the Cardinals anything of value in a straight up trade.

Sure teams would roll the dice, but the return would be minimal.

But we're in agreement, I'd have no problem cutting bait on both.

oh yeah - the return would be minimal indeed but ... keeping them and playing them has NEGATIVE value imo

I agree. He will get some starts in AA and if ready, he will move to AAA next season. The hitters in AAA are going to hit mistakes... hard. That is ok, if Doyle learns and develops he will be fine. But it is highly unlikely he has more than a late season cameo with the big club, if at all. It is 2027 where he may be a factor, but only if AAA goes well.
