Nobody should ever employ the word "obviously" again with Mozeliak out the door.

Burleson least likely due to production and years of control left. Why trade someone who is cheap, you have for many more years, and is top 5 batting average in the league with decent power? And he’s gotten better every year so far. He’s the type of player you would want to trade for.

You laid out, nicely, how valuable Burleson is, currently, to the Cardinals. And for the same reasons, an attractive trade chip.

This what I've been saying for a few months needs to happen. Most to least likely imo: Gorman, Noot, Burly, Donovan.

I'd prefer it to be Gorman and Burly but I bet the team can't quit Burly in the most Brokeback Mountain way possible, so it'll be Gorman and Noot. I'll only be disappointed if Donovan gets dealt.
It would be an absolute crime not to deal Burleson now while he still has value.

Yeah I mean unless there’s total lack of enthusiasm, deal him, then maybe bring Blaze Jordan up?

by not mentioning Walker, is Woo implying he is staying?

smilinjoefission wrote: 29 Sep 2025 08:55 am Nootbaar just isn't MLB material...his average is dropping year after year, his power numbers are dropping, his on field decisions, especially on base, are sus...he's just NOT a good player and well past time to move on.

Donovan brings more back, but I think Walker is the that needs to go. "Light hitting" is a term usually given to SS, NOT a corner OF, usually to someone well under 6' and 200lbs, NOT someone NBA size. He's not going to be "that" player here, so move on.

For the second season in a row Burly has been the best Cards player on offense. He more than earned his spot here.

As for Gorman, he seems like what he is now is what he'll be his career...so if we have better options move on from him.
This is the trouble with announcing a runway season and "seeing what you have" at the major league level. Everyone else sees what you have also. According the valuations at Baseball Trade Values, Donovan's value is about half what it was in May. Lars Nootbaar is worth about a third as much as he was in May. Gorman is also worth about a third as much as in May. Burleson is marginally higher. They have Jordan Walker's trade value at an even 0. The book is out.

I think she's just implying that he's not in the same tier of player as the rest of them, i.e. he has even less trade value.

I wouldn't be shocked if they trade him but I don't think it moves any sort of needle, and I'd prefer they just keep him in AAA until he shows something/anything. The vibe I'm seeing from everyone around the team is that this will be the plan.

good take
he wouldn't bring anything in a trade (although he could be a throw-in in a trade)

All of this depends on what is the Cards objective this off season.

If it is another year of rebuild and low spending I expect none to be dealt or if dealt maybe Donovan for a high end prospect.

If they think they can retool (meaning spending a lot more) and contend in 2026 then yes a pair of them have to go preferably Noot and Gorman and they sign a RHH slugging LFer.

But who knows. There are very few players on this team I would not listen on. Well none. For the right return they are all on the table.

It's been pretty clear and reported multiple times over the last few weeks that they're not planning to compete next year. If you're expecting them to spend the money they're saving with Mikolas/Arenado/Gray off the books, you're gonna be really disappointed.

Using him as a throw-in this winter would be a huge waste when you can just keep him in AAA and hope he can rebuild value. Worst case scenario is you just use him as a throw-in next winter rather than this one, he'll have basically the same value.

I think Donovan has to go. I think he's our best chance at getting a solid player back. And while I really like him as a player, but I also think he's overrated a bit by fans here. I'd love it if he were a super sub on a truly competitive team, but when he's one of your best players, it's not a good sign. I think you got a trade him and get a good prospect back.

This is why I won't be crushed if they trade him... it does make sense. I just think the intangibles he offers to the younger guys is somewhat more valuable than what he'll bring back in trade. I think the list of better veteran presence mentor figures in the entire league is pretty short.

I just look at the money remaining and with Nootbaar and Donovan closest to free agency, they look like the ones they will let go of. It’s how the Rays operated for years.

Obviously, getting something back would be the goal. I could see the Angels matching up with Jose Soriano as the target.
