When half of your opponents are in the top 20, that is a tough schedule. No idea why SEC went to 9 when you consider the level of competition. Mizzou will be playing an average ranking of 26, Ohio State of 46, and Iowa State will average 59.

Notre Dame should not get a seat at the table with the pathetic schedules they have in queue.

2026 - Georgia (5), OU (7), A&M (9), Texas (10), Ole Miss (13)
2027 - LSU (4), OU(7), A&M (9), Bama (17), Tenn (15), Vandy (18)

Other conferences…..
Ohio State 2027 - Oregon (3), Bama (17), Michigan (19)
Clemson 2027 - FSU (8)
Notre Dame 2027 - Georgia Tech (16)
Iowa State 2027 - Texas Tech (12)

If teams like SMU keep getting into the playoffs with an 11-1 record while only playing 1 top 25 team, then the SEC shot itself in the foot with the 9 game slate. Big 10 can go to 9 games since there is only 3 perennial top 25 teams in that conference. Only OSU, Penn State, and Oregon have finished in the top 25 each of the last 3 years, yet 7 teams in the SEC have finished in the top 25 each of the last 3. Then when you consider they don’t play everyone, Big 10 teams can get through the typical year with only 2 top 25 games. At least OSU is adding a tough OOC game to its schedule every other year, but teams like Penn State have a cake walk every year.

The SEC is not going to have to worry about that as they keep pushing for four auto bids.

The nine games should clear up tiebreakers for what the SEC ultimately wants, an abridged version of a conference tournament all held on one day.

The top two teams play for the title with the winner getting a bye and the loser getting a bid. #6 at #3 and #5 at #4 will play with the winners getting CFP bids.

The conference could even play those added games at neutral sites in NFL stadiums in Dallas, Houston, KC, New Orleans, Tampa, Jacksonville and Nashville.

Completely agree. I wish it were a 7 game conference schedule. I made that argument about how SEC basketball dominated the non conference last season and it really paid off when selection Sunday rolled around. We need to play more power 4 schools and have a bunch of head to head victories to hang our hats on.

That's great in theory, but the reality is teams in other conferences aren't looking for additional games against SEC competition.

Shouldn't you guys do what you can to play Kansas every year?

I think we do. But with only a few no-conference games each year, and other neighbors needing a butt whoopen', it's hard to have a annual non-conference rival. Although, SC, Florida, and others manage it.

If one forms a conference of 16 teams, 9 conference games is NOT enough. I guess I'm just old fashioned or nostalgic but a conference championship should mean something and then only conference champions should go on to the national championship journey - at least IMHO.

Exactly. Instead of the 9th game, we should have dropped a game and spent those two games pounding Big10 and ACC teams. Penn State and Indiana made the playoffs with playing only 1 top 25 conference game….and losing. When you do not have a win against a top 25 team you should not be in consideration, but records will always trump SOS. While people are saying the right thing about SOS the reality is they have never given it much consideration (except the UCF year).

You are simple too naive to know the truth. If there is a 10-2 SEC team playing in the championship and loses, they will be watching the playoffs from home. Another 10-2 SEC would leap front them who did not play in the championship game or they will hand that spot to a 11-1 Big12/ACC team. Last year if Georgia would have lost to Texas, then Ole Miss would have been playing in the playoffs instead of Georgia. Remember Ole Miss beat Georgia in week 11.

Who can forget Mizzou beating an undefeated Kansas team to end the regular season at #1 and then losing to the Sooners in the Big XII championship game and then getting snubbed for a major bowl while Kansas did. Mizzou went on to beat Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl to finish up like #4(?). It just proves your point sometimes it's better not to play in a conference championship game that to play and lose.

Read it again along with the subject title.

I'm not talking about the past or present, I was explaining what has been discussed about the future.

What he doesn’t understand, because he doesn’t understand sports, is we cannibalize ourselves as a conference the more we play each other. And the rest of the country doesn’t care. There’s severe SEC fatigue. If it were a fair and just world, there’d be 5-6 SEC teams in the playoffs every year. But if we don’t have enough meaningful head to head games vs other conferences, we won’t have the bragging rights to impress the committee. And the SEC will not get its just due.

Again, all we have to do is look at last season’s basketball as the template. The talk in January was how ridiculously better the SEC was than every other conference and would we get 14 of the 16 teams in the tourney.
