Kirby is really good this year
He is pounding the rock every game as he goes with the flow and knows he has two absolute studs running the ball and his QB is very good. But he is also NOT showing all his cards. even with being behind in KU and SC games he knew eventually they would wear down the opposing d and win those games. especially SC game he didn't throw to a secondary that had holes as one of the best things about having a great running attack is you bring the safeties and corners up closer to the LOS and then you go over the top. Instead he kept everything in shorter zone effectively completing passes but didn't go to his stud Coleman much or norfleet. just enough to keep chains moving.
You most likely won't see much in Umass game as it won't be neccessary. Gives Beau more tape to analyse and get better as you can see little things that a more experienced QB wouldn't do. Dude seems like a willing student and every game he shows something new and his accuracy has amazed all the talking heads who cover CFb.
As a OC myself you always want to keep a few tendencies hidden or seldom seen as you look at the monster coming to Como in couple weeks in Alabama. JMHO but I believe Kirby is all about being very competitive or beating Alabama. Which would change EVERYONE's opinion about MU FB. of course this is all predicated on Batoon and his secondary coaches fixing the secondary and the constant miscommunications. several of those long completions corners were actually in decent position but expecting Safety help which never arrived or was even close to the play which is maddening. Plus it's fixable and MU has cupcake game and then bye week to fix this.
IF MU wants to be considered a big brand they HAVE to be prepared for this game and we will know a lot more about Drink and his staff after that one. last year was a good one but in Bama and Aggies game they were NOT prepared and got destroyed.

You don't have to be a former, JV high school coach to see that this team is prepared every time they take the field.IF MU wants to be considered a big brand they HAVE to be prepared for this game.
Re: Kirby is really good this year
He did a better job calling plays against SC than Kansas, imo.
OC's are always under scrutiny I get that but 1st and goal on the 7? late in the SC game they ran once on first down then passed twice, failing and having to settle for 3. I did not get that for a team dominating with their run game.
I'm just not convinced they are a run first team in the true sense.

You need to realize that scrutiny comes mainly from people who don't know what they're watching but feel compelled to be critical.dhsux wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 10:36 am He did a better job calling plays against SC than Kansas, imo.

Mizzou never had a first and goal in the fourth quarter.

Mizzou started a drive in the first quarter at the one yard line. They got six points out of situation that averages a little more than two for an elite team, and your criticism was a point was left on the field, when the XP hit the upright.

One thing I wish Moore would stop or greatly limit: designed bootleg rollout pass plays. They aren't going to work well in SEC play against fast Ds. And they shrink the passing zone for the defense. Keep Beau mainly behind his blockers and move the pocket if necessary. On one such rollout, he took a huge hit from a fast-closing SC spy, taking his pins out, that could've been season-ending.
Re: Kirby is really good this year
Pribula doesn’t seem to be very comfortable in the pocket. Even Drink has commented he’s left the pocket too soon on occasion. I would have liked to have seen a few more deep shots to loosen up the defense a bit.icon wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 18:17 pm One thing I wish Moore would stop or greatly limit: designed bootleg rollout pass plays. I hope Zoellers gets to run the whole offense on Saturday. (No, you idiots, I don’t mean open the entire trick play tool box). Let him run the same offense as Pribula (No, you idiots, I DON’T mean leave the first string in). Let him throw the ball downfield.
Re: Kirby is really good this year
My guess is that's indicative of not having a lot of faith in the OL maintaining a pocket for long. To respond to Red's post as well, it's probably one of the reasons that Pribula might not be looking that comfortable in the pocket and the team not being able to open up on downfield passing. The OL needs to consistently provide pass protection on drop backs for this offense to reach it's full potential. If Pribula or Kirby, don't have faith in the line to hold up it's going to dictate play and play calling.icon wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 18:17 pm One thing I wish Moore would stop or greatly limit: designed bootleg rollout pass plays. These designed plays are designed for a reason. Handoff, handoff, handoff.....icon wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 18:17 pm One thing I wish Moore would stop or greatly limit: designed bootleg rollout pass plays. Fake handoff, roll right with that fast SEC defense over persuing, get the TE or WR to release from a block, and there should be a bunch of green.
And Pribula's a running QB, not a China doll.

But it could be by design to play to Pribulas strengths and minimize what may be a weakness in his development to this point in his career.
Frankly in his short time here and in limited action at Penn ST. he didn't have a lot of experience as a pure pocket passer. He's also not the classic big QB who can sit in the pocket and see everything.
Rolling him out or having a moving pocket can also minimize tge chances for strip sacks and interceptions which is tantamount in Drinkwitz mind in his QB'S taking care of the ball.
Re: Kirby is really good this year
those that don't like it when Beau rolls out have no understanding of CFB or him. when he rolls out he creates chaos in secondary as they have to make decisions and will open up more receivers, he just needs to get better at finding them and not running as much. Against SC went back and looked at game slowly several times he took off when he had one or TWO wide open receivers right in front of him. He will get better at that as he spends a lot of time looking at tape and has coaches who will chew him out and teach him. As far as taking shots that's again on him and lack of experience. He will learn if nothing there to throw it away and avoid those.
Do agree when he does roll out he needs his TE or RB release in front of him to give him quick outlet.
Kirby needs to smarten up his playcalling in RedZone which has been mediocre. Not using his sledgehammer rb's or simply having Norfleet line up as outside WR and doing simply slant which with his size is unstoppable. Remember DGB? That's what they had him doing and it worked everytime and he was similar size. Saw that multiple times with different teams Saturday and it worked everytime even with guys who were not quite as big as Brett. brings kirby's grade down to a B till he gets more effective there.

Re: Kirby is really good this year
I understand rollouts perfectly. When they work, they look great. But they didn't work against SC. Most resulted in throwaways, including one in which he took a huge hit to the side of his knee as he threw that took his legs out from under him. I also understand that rollouts shrink the field for the defense. When running to his right or left, unless he can plant his feet, he's not going to be throwing across the middle or to the other side of the field. That limits where he can throw the ball. I guess you don't understand that, Mr. OC.hdhntr148 wrote: ↑24 Sep 2025 11:10 am those that don't like it when Beau rolls out have no understanding of CFB or him. when he rolls out he creates chaos in secondary as they have to make decisions and will open up more receivers, he just needs to get better at finding them and not running as much. Passing from the pocket allows QBs, given proper time, to scan the entire field if necessary before selecting a target. Look at the most successful QBs in football history. Most have been pocket QBs, including the GOAT, Tom Brady. There is a reason Drink wants Pribula to stay in the pocket more. And I would hope Moore as well by extension. Now I will agree that rollouts accompanied by a receiver rolling with the QB can work as an extension of the run game, especially after play action. That's not what was happening against SC.
Re: Kirby is really good this year
The starting offensive line needs the work - with more playing times comes better communication. Keep them in the first half.
Don't forget that after this game, they get two weeks before their next game (Alabama) so no need to "rest" players to keep them fresh.
Let Roberts and Hardy try to obtain 100 yards in the first half. Then give Matt Zollers (NOT Zoellers) a chance to get more experience under his belt (heck, give Brett Brown a few snaps) as well as Favrow, Jones and Haygood (backup running backs) snaps as well.
