Re: Bernie Parent passes
Yeah, Glenn — soon to be 94 on October 3, is older than Ken Dryden (78), Ed Giacomin (86), or Bernie Parent (80).
I hope MISTER Goalie is doing well up in
Alberta on his farm.
Re: Bernie Parent passes
The Flyers were lucky to get him back after trading him to Toronto. Another great goalie from the 70s passes. RIP
Re: Bernie Parent passes
Dam, Bernie and Eddie
You know your old when your memories of youth are passing
RIP.

Re: Bernie Parent passes
What great memories. There is no way that the Flyers win those two Stanley Cups without him. There was a time when Quebec was the breeding ground for most of the world's best goalies. R.I.P. Bernie.
Re: Bernie Parent passes
Fast forward a few years…I wonder if Philly gets a Cup in the 80s had Pelle Lindbergh not been killed?
Re: Bernie Parent passes
RIP Bernie
Re: Bernie Parent passes
A good question. Here is another to ponder -
Parent was playoff MVP both years they won the Cup. And Joe Watson said that Parent's 75 performance against Buffalo was his best Final. But in '76 he suffered the eye injury that would eventually lead to his retirement and Wayne Stephenson took the net. That was - coincidentally - the year Montreal absolutely gelled and they went on their streak of 4 straight Cups. As several members of the Canadians have shared in interviews (Robinson and Dryden, specifically), they were taking that series against Philly personally. in their view, if Philly wins the Cup, the pro game would become the "bully" and "goon" game that the Flyers were known for. In their opinion, that wasn't hockey. Montreal had built a team that could play any way they needed to play. To a man, the Canadians felt that they had to win that Cup or the pro game would never recover.
If Parent was 100% in 76, do the Flyers three peat? Now, Stephenson was very good in the Final, but he wasn't Bernie. Montreal swept Philly, so in my opinion, they would have still won the Cup, but it would have been a closer Final.

Re: Bernie Parent passes
The Flyers were a big tough team. But they also had lots of skill. Clarke, Barber, Macleish, Leach, among others.
Even if Parent was healthy in 1976, there was no way they were beating the Habs that year.
It may or may not have been a 4 game sweep- maybe they win one game

I read your post and it got me thinking. For all the Habs dominance throughout history, it’s been 32 years since their last Cup. CrazyPPG wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 08:55 am The Flyers were a big tough team. But they also had lots of skill. Clarke, Barber, Macleish, Leach, among others.

And the coach was ... former Blues HC Jacques Demers!netboy65 wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 09:38 amI read your post and it got me thinking. A message was sent in that series that the Habs could play any way they needed to play. And it only took one play.PPG wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 08:55 am The Flyers were a big tough team. But they also had lots of skill. Clarke, Barber, Macleish, Leach, among others.

As Gary Dornhoefer was just about to enter the MTL zone, Larry Robinson lines him up and delivers a thunderous hip check.
That check bent the boards at the Spectrum leaving a gap at the top of the boards of several inches.
The game was stopped so that the maintenance crew could hammer the boards back into position. Feel free to look it up. It's on YouTube.
And you are right about the skilled players Philly had. Reggie Leach had 19 goals and 24 points in those playoffs and won the Conn Smythe marking the first time a non goalie has won the Conn on a losing team. Connor McDavid has since duplicated the feat, but Leach and McDavid are the only two from the losing team.
Re: Bernie Parent passes
I posted part of this in the "Masks and Jersey's" thread, but thought it was appropriate to re-post it here:
I'm one month shy of my 60th birthday and was introduced to hockey and the Blues by an older brother (he had season tickets at the old barn) when I was around 8 or 9. Yes indeed it was a great time to be a kid and follow hockey!
By the time I was nearly a teenager, me and another friend were huge hockey fans. And Bernie Parent was easily one of our very favorite non-Blues players. When we played street hockey, my buddy was almost always in goal and was always Bernie Parent. He even provided a little of his own play-by-play: "Parent with the big save" would be bellowed out frequently!
RIP Mr. Parent
