Surprising not much mention about Herrera's upcoming surgery

Post by ramfandan »

The story a few days ago about Herrera getting a shot at catcher spot for 2026 got a lot of pub and comments on CT .
Then a couple days ago Herrera in an on-field interview broke the news that he was going to have elbow surgery in offseason.
He said he had the issue for a couple seasons and that the problem hindered him from having his arm in prooper throwing position.

The surgery news was new to me and certainly must have been a topic discussed amont him, Oli, and Bloom in the meeting about giving him a shot at catcher for 2026.

if he's had this problem for a couple of years, why did they think he could be the everyday catcher this season??

It was new to everyone, and it was discussed an appropriate amount imo since it came out in the last couple days... discussed as much as Winn's surgery afaict.

I would guess he was told from the outset that it wasn't a major issue and he can play with it, and players are always leery of going under the knife. And then maybe he got a 2nd opinion more recently that thought it might be hindering his throwing. Speculation of course but there are several logical explanations for how it might have happened this way...

reminds me of the time Tony Pena showed up one day with glasses and claimed it was his vision causing him to suck so bad. Whitey responded "those are the weakest glasses I've ever seen".

excellent point ! players are reluctant to 'go under the knife' . The result of surgery directly impacts their livelihood of making big $$$ in a pro sport.
People in other walks of life usually don't have their income riding on the result of surgery result. It is often the last resort for a player .
