How do the Blues need to perform for the next decade to be considered successful?
This is the minimum for me
Regular season:
Make the playoffs 9/10 years
Finish in the top 10 in the league 7/10 years
Playoffs:
1 final loss
1 conference final loss
4 2nd round losses
3 1st round losses
Winning a cup would be a bonus.
I think the type of team the Blues is building will have a better shot at being successful in the playoffs than being a perennial top 5 regular season team.

outside of the stanley cup win, this would be the best run of any Blues in history. This is a high bar to clear and most teams aren't meeting that level of consistency. So if this is the minimum to be "successful" then good luck.
This goes to show how wildly successful Army's tenure has been. The standard for the current Blues fan is to be in the playoffs every year, making runs.
I do like the statement you made at the end. Their team seemingly is being built for playoff success and not sustainable regular season success. That is from a character aspect. But if their young guys hit, they will be a regular season success. Teams that win during the regular season seem to drown the other side in goals. The Blues look to be a team that is flooding their forward group with talent. Their defensive group all has offensive upside. It's hard to find a "hole" in this team at the moment, because the way they left us last year was with basically everything hitting post monty. Goalie play was OK, but they deem it to be a top 3-5 tandem. Defensive play was superb. When Monty took over the defense produced more goals than any team and finished in the top 4. Offensive play picked up.
We will have to see where the dust settles, but your assessment of successful is a lofty goal. I like it, but it is lofty.

Parayko, Faulk, Schenn, Fowler and Binnington won’t be here in 5 years or in much different roles so it’s really hard to say what it will look like at that time

It’s lofty but they already achieved those results prior to missing the playoffs in 2023. Some of their playoff losses to LA and the hawks it was said they were the other teams hardest opponents. I think they’ve had a blueprint of what they want to build and are in the way to achieving it. Binner may resign with the team or Hofer might be ready for the number 1 role. Anyway just having some fun to see what everyone’s expectations are.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑18 Sep 2025 09:20 am outside of the stanley cup win, this would be the best run of any Blues in history. Having lived through the 1980's with this team, just still having a team in the STL is success for me.

A decade is a LONG time in sports, especially the NHL. We dont even know how Steen will perform as GM next year, let alone three, four, or ten years out.
Our history has been to make the playoffs 9 of 10 years, and get past the second round maybe once every 10 years - so based on averages, that'd be my minimum. But everything is relative.
If the Blues nail their next five drafts and/or manage to have some Smelly caliber prospects while maintaining a competitive roster, my expectations would be higher.
If the Blues spend the next five years wallowing in no man's land (picking 10-15, never good enough to escape the first round), cycle through 2 or more coaches, then my expectations would be lower.
Who knows? The next five years (Steen's start) will go a long way to determining if they maintain their upward trajectory (Edm, Fla, TB) or sink back to the pack (LA, Van, Cal).

id be content with 10 cups.
Re: How do the Blues need to perform for the next decade to be considered successful?
I think you're setting your sight's a little low.
Re: How do the Blues need to perform for the next decade to be considered successful?
I think there’s a good chance Parayko and Binnington still are here, but as you stated different roles most likely. The other 3 will def be gone.
Re: How do the Blues need to perform for the next decade to be considered successful?
I think the others are not that difficult to replace but getting someone to step up into the roles Parayko and Binnington hold now will be the key.
Re: How do the Blues need to perform for the next decade to be considered successful?
This coming year is pretty dang important for the guys below as to how the next 5 plus years will go.
Brobergs continued progress
Snuggs caliber of play
Mailloux - pretender or a real steal
DD - is he a true #10 pick/answer for center?
Holloway's continuation of great play
1-2 prospects showing nhl mettle this year.
Hit on 4 or 5 of 6 and this team is on a run of long term contention, imo.
And I am not discounting vet importance I'm actually counting on them.

7 Stanley Cups and 9-10 top 5 picks

1. Maintain solid committed ownership with sufficient financial means.
2. Grow the fan base. Fill the Arena, but also serve those who cannot attend games.
3. Ice a team that is relevant, playoff team more often than not (8-10 appearances is a reasonable target).

Pretty easy - win a cup.
Nothing else matters.

Maybe to you…but it’s a business so lots matters outside of that. With 30+ teams winning a cup is a mini lottery
