There was this guy named George Herman Ruth. Might ought to look at his numbers. Compare them to Ohtani'scardiological wrote: ↑16 Sep 2025 23:53 pm Hit number 50 tonight. Also pitched 5 innings, allowed 0 hits.

Ruth played in a time when there was no diversity, guys ate pasta more than lifting weights and pitchers were throwing 80 mph tops. He stole home ten times in his career. That shows you how mediocre the athletes were in his day.Sheepdawg wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 00:17 amThere was this guy named George Herman Ruth. Might ought to look at his numbers. And Ohtani plays in a time where the best athletes play football and basketball.TopofthePerch wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 01:00 amRuth played in a time when there was no diversity, guys ate pasta more than lifting weights and pitchers were throwing 80 mph tops. Re: Ohtani Five-0
Doesn't matter, Ruth played against the best of his time.
What's known of Ruth's numbers barnstorming against black teams were that they were even better than his ML numbers. Wonder what kind of success the great "diversity" pitchers of the time would have had with a steady diet of Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Foxx, Hornsby, Speaker and the such.
Bleacher Reports rated Walter Johnson's fastball as the best of all time, Lefty Grove's at #4.

Also he's just the 6th player to hit 50 homers in two consecutive seasons, the others being:
Babe Ruth
Mark McGwire
Alex Rodriguez
Sammy Sosa
Ken Griffey Jr.
So only the 3rd player not using PEDs.

His favorite PEDs were gallons of beer followed by 3 or 4 women.dugoutrex wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 09:52 amRuth literally took anything he could get his hands on!3dender wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 09:30 amBeen saying this since 2022cardiological wrote: ↑16 Sep 2025 23:53 pm Hit number 50 tonight. Re: Ohtani Five-0
Yes, I’m sure hitting was SO much easier without a helmet, armor, mound being 15in instead of current 10in, with head hunting pitchers lurking.
Do some of you bother to research your ignorance before hitting keystrokes?
I’m sure it escaped you that BASEBALL was the main major sport with MLB only fielding 8 teams in each league. So where do you think ALL the best athletes were?? This integration issue somehow is your main argument but today it’s completely forgotten about that Blacks are absent in MLB???

Ohtani would’ve dominated that level of competition even way more than he is now. He’d have set records that could never be surpassed with the evolution of the modern athlete over the last 90 years.TopofthePerch wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 01:00 amRuth played in a time when there was no diversity, guys ate pasta more than lifting weights and pitchers were throwing 80 mph tops. Re: Ohtani Five-0
He’s a great player but he would not be the athlete is today if he grew up back then he certainly wouldn’t be lifting weights running on treadmills know anything about nutrition or work out programs he would be a completely different player that’s why it’s stupid to compare players today to those back then and say they would be great back then they wouldn’t be the same players. Ruth played against every one and hit well but who knows if he would be as good in the modern age having to face 3 or 4 high octane throwing pitchersCorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 12:04 pmOhtani would’ve dominated that level of competition even way more than he is now. I was agreeing with a response to the poster that said of Ruth’s numbers, “Compare them to Ohtani”. That was the parameter set in the comment.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 12:55 pmHe’s a great player but he would not be the athlete is today if he grew up back then he certainly wouldn’t be lifting weights running on treadmills know anything about nutrition or work out programs he would be a completely different player that’s why it’s stupid to compare players today to those back then and say they would be great back then they wouldn’t be the same players. You are definitely correct in that Ohtani would not have been as advanced or physically matured.
I also agree the generational comparisons are typically useless. Sometimes if I’m bored enough or need a break at work, I’ll engage in the nonsense.
Since you mentioned it, it would actually be more interesting to see how Babe Ruth’s skillset would’ve translated to the modern game. I suspect he’d be held to higher standards on fitness and overall lifestyle, to say the least.
