Right now we're 1979...took until 1982 to build that team. Marmot has no future so throwing away a season next season doesn't seem in keeping with a rebuild. Get a manager this off-season and start the rebuild.

Mediocre-Average team, terrible crowds and on ownership that stopped caring after ABJr died.
At least we had Simmons to enjoy.
Gibby
Brock
Simba
Torre

Four Hall of Famers, this team has none.
Unfortunately by 1973, Gibby was no longer a great pitcher and Augie Busch’s ego got in the way and traded Steve Carlton to the Phillies. Also, I often wonder how we would have done if we had retained Dick Allen. He played really well for the White Sox after leaving the Cards and the ChiSox enjoyed a competitive run in the ‘70’s. Plus they were a blast to watch.

Hiya SmilinJoe! I totally agree that Marmol and the current coaching staff need to be replaced. All of them.

However, I’m afraid that I must disagree that the current team is as good as our 1979 team. We are far worse right now. The ‘79 team finished 10 games over .500 at 86-76 and had pitchers John Denny, Bob Forsch, Pete Vuckovitch, Mark Littell, and field players Ted Simmons, Keith Hernandez, Tommy Herr, Ken Oberkfell, George Hendrick, and Dane Iorg. Much of that ‘79 team stayed and won a WS in ‘82. Herzog came in and made a couple of blockbuster trades and also demanded a winning attitude. Unfortunately, I don’t see more than one or two players on the current roster worth keeping to transition to a new era. At least the ‘79 team had a decent core of talent.

But more importantly the next 176 games will most likely be one of the worst stretches of Cardinals baseball many people here have ever seen.

The new front office is already telegraphing the plans. The Buster Olney story about Marmol sticking around didn’t come out of the blue.

This rebuild isn’t going to be typical of the cardinal way, it’s a total strip down, low (bottom 10%) payroll, revolving door of players we have never heard of while we try to find 2-3 to build around.

After all is said and done, I’m not sure any single player on the roster right now ever sees a playoff game for the St Louis Cardinals. Do the math, it ain’t mathin’…..
Some think that Bloom will give Oli Marmol a one-year 'trial run' with Bloom's new roster for 2026. See what Marmol does with a new cast of young guys. Then after 2026 Bloom will decide if he wants to move forward with a new manager or stick with Marmol. Other speculation is that Randy Flores will not be retained . His contract expires at end of this year.
Dan, I sincerely hope this is not the case. Marmol needs to be dismissed on October 3 this year. We need to start with a totally clean sheet of paper to send a message that mediocrity and slow, sludgy, bad defense, low IQ baseball will no longer be tolerated. Cleaning house would also send a signal to the fans that DeWitt Jr and III are actually serious about delivering a better team — which is crucial to increased attendance and interest.

That said, I’m afraid we will be stuck with Marmol another year.

Had Auggie not let his ego get in the way over a measly $5,000 Lefty would stepped right in for Gibby after 1973 and been the ACE.

Toss in N. Briles plus J. Reuss and there would be more WS flags flying over Busch had they kept those three together in the 1970's. :x

Agree on Allen too, another stupid move dealing him for T. Sizemore.

You got it, Rock! We could have had a great team in the ‘70’s, but Auggie meddled too much. He finally got it when he hired Whitey and let him be GM and manager and gave him full reins. Too bad Mr. Busch didn’t realize this 8-9 years earlier.

Buster, or any reporter, are doing speculation reporting that may or may not
be accurate. Educated guess work done by connecting dots.

We don't know how Bloom see's each individual player and their place as a future piece. If any are not seen as that
part, do they replace them or bridge to the next prospect. We don't know how the FO see's the lack of excitement
around the team or if there is any urgency to change that. We do not know how he see's the dugout. Does he attempt
to improve the performance of people there or mix it up a bit.

I don't believe that they can be content with all the players or the fan reaction to the team. They probably won't
buy their way out of the situation but to just put out the same product would bring a similar surprise.

and

The crowds are 1970's size!

Gotcha' and agree, the players we had as little kids in the 1970's to root for where way better than this ragtag group.

But as far as the W/L record and crowd size, this is 1970's like.

Now if we could just get those $2 General admission seats back!
