John Kelly Interview on SiriusXM Hockey Channel

Post by Hazelwood72 »

They just finished an interview with JK about 15 minutes ago. This channel is based in Toronto and it demonstrates the RESPECT the hockey world has for John Kelly.

John, in his usual classy way, had good things to say about St. Louis. The interviewer asked him who his mentors were which I thought was kind of a dumb question — it was John’s HOF dad, of course. John also cited Danny Gallivan and Bob Cole of CBC as models (but not necessarily mentors, per se).

Kelly also noted that the greatest announcers reserved their most forceful calls for the most important plays. A first period goal wouldn’t warrant as dramatic a call as a late third period goal in a close game. IMO, this is where his dad really nailed it over the years — you could hear Dan Kelly’s voice rise as a shooter closed in on goal in a crucial moment. I think JK did this pretty well, too.

Kelly also said how he was NOT ready to retire and is looking forward to doing Kings play by play this season.

IMHO, this was a real bad move by Blues management. Bad optics, bad timing.

If you have SiriusXM, you might be able to hear a replay later today.

Yet people here glossed over/defended the poor treatment and disrespect of the only cup champions they ever had … Maroon, Perron, Pietrangelo and others … and guys like Oshie before that.

It’s funny

You are correct — he did say exactly that. Further demonstration of what a quality guy he is. No finger pointing or whining. He should - and will - always be welcome in St. Louis.

I don’t disagree, and I’ve always been pizzed over the treatment that Maroon got. He wasn’t even asking for an exorbitant salary. I still can’t understand why we let him walk. Ditto for Perron.

He absolutely is a quality guy. I expect a rousing standing ovation for him when the Kings come here. But JK also understands it's a business and moves are made that not everyone likes. Hockey is funny that way.

Maroon didn’t even get a phone call. Perron and Pietrangelo (a cup captain) were disrespected publicly. Oshie got hung up on.

Armstrong has done some great things, but he’s been an egotistical, self-consumed poor leader/person on many occasions.

But Kelly gets people worked up? Weird

Acceptable vs Not Acceptable.

Acceptable
A business moving in another direction for the sake of revenue, cost, marketing, etc. etc. etc.

Moving on from a team legend in a way that truly honors that person/families dedication and contributions.

Not Acceptable
A business telling the customers only a small piece of the what happened, and letting rumors carry the water for them.

Not giving the fans the ability to pay their tribute to their beloved announcer/family.

Making a business decision but not owning up to it.

Without a doubt, Blues management WREAKS of being just another Kroenke--here to take advantage of the loyalty and good heart of St Louis fans.

I'm so glad that John Kelly did what needed to be done here to expose the whole TRUTH.

GREAT CALL, JOHN KELLY! GREAT CALL ON THE CHEAP SHOT TO THE ST LOUIS FANS!!!!!

I hope LA treasures him. They’ve not had a play by play man with the pedigree and experience of JK.
Bob Miller was excellent for over forty years and is in the NHL HOF for Broadcasters, but he’s been retired for eight years.
Jim Fox is a “Legacy” color man. He played for the Kings before Gretzky made it cool. He ain’t great, but JK will be fine with him.
Darryl Evans post-game is like a Don Cherry wardrobe flashback- he dresses like a pimp.
It’ll be GREAT having Kelly here. I haven’t cared much about the Kings since they blew the 93 SCF.

Did JK need this new job? Maybe. Maybe not.

Did JK need to expose the full truth so that fans did not believe that JK just left without saying goodbye? Absolutely.

It was dirty and disrespectful for the Blues to treat JK and the fans like this.

I've thought a lot about this. Blues broadcasters over the years have been a mixed bag ranging from inept (Jack Buck) to Hall Of Fame (Dan Kelly). John Kelly was a pro, and he brought a familial connection to the tradition of Blues hockey. In the end the Blues should have intervened, this was disrespectful of what I believe is a sizable segment of their fan base.

I hope the new guys can win me over. What I've heard in the past wasn't reassuring.

Lame, at best. Players come and go, good lead broadcasters tend to have longevity. THEY are communicating directly with the audience, year in year out. They become part of the the team brand. They become the voice of the team, of hockey to the fan base. The really good ones develop a familial or friendship relationship with fans. Some small number of players may engage with the fan base but rarely does it ever approach the level of engagement fans have with the lead broadcaster.

None of us know the full truth to what happened behind the scenes. One thing I've learned in life that there are always 2 sides to every story. Also, it's not worth my time to speculate one way or the other. JK landed on his feet and so did Maroon, Perron, Oshie, and Pietrangelo. 3 of 4 won SC's after they left the Blues.

I'm in the minority here, but I'm excited to hear Kerbs calling the games on TV. Did you know that he's been with the Blues organization longer that John Kelly has? He's earned this opportunity.

Right. Cup winning players not being respected is lame. You’re really in touch with people
