Overuse
Some people felt that Seth Maness had his career cut short because of overuse in 2014, when he pitched 80 1/3 innings in 73 appearances.
Right now Leahy has pitched 78 2/3 innings in 56 appearances, with several weeks still to go in the season.
Is he on the verge of overuse, or does the fewer number of appearances make a big difference? Fewer times warming up?

Re: Overuse
Leahy gets more rest between use for one thing.

Re: Overuse
Good question they’re used in different ways for sure oli seems to use lehay for 1+ to 2 innings then tries to give him two days off MM just used maness in a lot of games which I think probably did cut his career short but who really knows. If lehay breaks down like maness and mujica then yea he was probably matheneyedCranny wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 21:21 pm Some people felt that Seth Maness had his career cut short because of overuse in 2014, when he pitched 80 1/3 innings in 73 appearances.

The cardinals don’t have many other choices. So, my guess is he’s one of the five. Not ideal but I expect the 2026 approach to be very similar to this season. Hopeful, they spend a ton of money they’ll have capacity for once the new cba is in placeOzziesfan41 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 22:13 pmIf so you can expect him to hit a wall and be fatigued around the all star break like liberatore did

Re: Overuse
I hope not. He’s effective in the roll he’s in. People aren’t going to like the results of him starting. He was last a starter at AA in 2022 and he had a 5.29 ERA. It will be another hicks situation where he’s trying to learn to be a starter in the major leagues after not having started in 3 years and not since AA. The results will be ugly. I would rather them sign a guy coming off an injury or veteran who will take a one year contract but we will seewoofy25 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 22:20 pmThe cardinals don’t have many other choices. I agree with this. If they want to expand his role give him a legitimate shot to close. He’s earned it.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 22:46 pmI hope not. He’s effective in the roll he’s in. Re: Overuse
He won't be a starter next season.
Leahy can effectively give you multiple innings out of the bullpen which is a rare commodity in this one and done age.
Him being able to do that will be more valuable than being an ineffective starter.

Re: Overuse
Rollie Fingers pitched up to 132 IP out of the pen and well into the upper 70s in appearances quite a few times. He pitched until he was 38 - so it didn't cut his career short.Cranny wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 21:21 pm Some people felt that Seth Maness had his career cut short because of overuse in 2014, when he pitched 80 1/3 innings in 73 appearances.

Re: Overuse
Bloom had better learn how to acquire MLB proven starters from outside the org, because if we insist on home growing everything, we will never have enough choices, or much of any good options.woofy25 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 22:20 pmThe cardinals don’t have many other choices. forward with the same FO.
I understand it much less when it will be under different management.
Leahy may get a shot to start but that doesn't put him already in the top 5.

Is he still the same pitcher as he was 3 seasons agoOzziesfan41 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 22:46 pmI hope not. He’s effective in the roll he’s in. People aren’t going to like the results of him starting. repertoire and control wise?
I like him in the BP as well, just asking.
Re: Overuse
Leahy has been getting more rest between appearances and when he does pitch, he has been pitching multiply innings. I believe he has been handled correctly and expect him to be a starter next season.Cranny wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 21:21 pm Some people felt that Seth Maness had his career cut short because of overuse in 2014, when he pitched 80 1/3 innings in 73 appearances.

Re: Overuse
If he succeeds and becomes a stud, you still will only get 4-5 innings per start. That’s one of our issues. Innings not pitched.
If he is a number three type pitcher, then he joins a group of threes.
We need a lock down ace. Gilbert types. Then add some three four and fives.

Re: Overuse
They are not going to get a "lock down ace" by a trade or a signing. They have to develop one. Leahy seems to know how to pitch, thus I believe he can become a starter. Everyone starts somewhere and many good pitchers started as relievers.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑11 Sep 2025 07:49 am If he succeeds and becomes a stud, you still will only get 4-5 innings per start.
