Sources say #mnwild superstar Kirill Kaprizov’s camp turned down an extension offer believed to be 8-years, $128 million in a meeting on Tuesday in Minnesota that would have made him the highest-paid player in #NHL history in both AAV ($16 million) and total dollars.

Wowzers. Hard to turn that down.
Wonder if he actually wants more or if he is just planning to slow play it because he ultimately doesn’t want to hitch the rest of his career to the Mild.
He might also be waiting for McDavid to reset the market, idk.

Thats absolutely insane that he turned it down.
Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
Wow...
Maybe he wants out of Minnesota or he's looking for a shorter deal to not tie himself down to one team.
Or he's crazy and thinks he's worth more than that. Nuts.

Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
That's crazy...he's obviously a great player but how much more does he expect to get? I can't imagine he'll get more even on the open market. I would be sweating if I was Minny about him now because that tells me he is, at least at this point, not ready to commit there long term.
Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
Someone in the Wild leaked that he was going to get an offer that would most likely be the highest in nhl history a week or 2 ago. Now it’s leaked that he turned it down.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:28 am Wowzers. Hard to turn that down.

It feels like the Mild are purposely doing this to pressure Krill into signing. They must know he wants out

Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
This is why I like the way the Blues do business. Did they gamble on Kyrou? Sure. Did they give Buchy maybe a bit too much. Yep. But they got really good players on good contracts. The Blues operate under a model that is appropriate for them. I don't know why this is happening to the Mild, as it's a good hockey market. But it's not a Boston or Toronto or the Rags etc etc. If they can't sign him with that offer, that is unlucky. It's why the Hurricanes have such a nice operation going. But for whatever reason you can't get a guy like Rantanen to want to extend there even when you are offering the big bucks. You have to do business that works in your market.

Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
my initial thought is that he's waiting on McDavid because he then gets all the leverage. They are both in the same situation, and if McDavid bails and signs a high AAV somewhere else, he gets to use that for the Mild and other suitors. If McDavid stays and signs a high AAV he get's to use that information as well. He has the chance of burning that bridge tho if he does actually like Minnesota.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:28 am Wowzers. Hard to turn that down.

The only other options are that he wants a shorter contract for the next window in 4 years to go make an even bigger splash. The interesting part is if he and McDavid were to actually hit the open market (doubt they would and would probably be traded because the risk is so great) just to get that same contract he has to get to 18.2m AAV.

Chicago has long been the rumor, but this sounds more like a NYR move to me.
Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
Agreed. Only two real possibilities: (1) he has no desire to stay in Minny; and (2) he is going the Matthews route.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:52 ammy initial thought is that he's waiting on McDavid because he then gets all the leverage. While I think shorter contract may be an option, I think this is more about location/culture than being the highest paid player or even winning. It seems like Russian players seem to gravitate to other Russians more than other hockey nationalities. New York has a huge Russian population, and the east coast offers several direct flights home.callitwhatyouwant wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:52 ammy initial thought is that he's waiting on McDavid because he then gets all the leverage. Maybe he compromises on a shorter deal to stay in the upper Midwest, but my guess is he only entertains full term offers from NYR, and maybe WSH (Ovi heir), or PHI.
Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
Regardless of what McDavid sets the market as paying $128 million AAV $16 million is just too much for Kirill Kaprizov. I guess Minnesota is that sure they don't want to have him walk. That said, the obvious thought here is either he wants more money or a new location.TBone wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 11:23 am Frank Seravalli

Re: Wild's Kirill Kaprizov Turns Down 8 Years / $128 Mil
If he's turning it down, it's because he's not interested in staying in Minnesota (or at least not for 8 years). He's not going to get as much as McDavid, and McDavid isn't going to reset the market to such a degree that 16M for Kaprizov would be some kind of bargain.
The official max contract is 20% of the cap, but the biggest contracts in the league have typically still been below 16%. McDavid's current deal was 15.72% when signed. Mackinnon's big contract was lower. Draisaitl's was lower. Crosby's was lower when he signed his original big 8.7M deal back in the day. That's basically the unwritten individual player cap. This offer to Kaprizov aligns with that. It would be 15.38%.
Even if McDavid sets the market and goes up to something like 16.5% of the cap next year, that would still be just a 17.16M per year deal. If McDavid is getting 17M, then no way is Kaprizov worth more than 16M.

My gut tells me a new location is the more likely of the two.dr0zombie wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 12:03 pmRegardless of what McDavid sets the market as paying $128 million AAV $16 million is just too much for Kirill Kaprizov.
