#Flames sign goaltender Dustin Wolf to a 7-year, $52.5 million contract extension following incredible rookie season.
It's a mostly unprecedented contract for a goaltender with Wolf's #NHL experience (71 GP), surpassing deals for Igor Shesterkin and others in total $ and AAV.

Spencer Knight is going to get paid but I hope it's not long term like this gamble. Signing goalies long term seems to be a problem in this league.

Yeah You would think they would figure that out after all the damage oilers did with signing unproven goaliesBalotelliMassive wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 10:17 am Spencer Knight is going to get paid but I hope it's not long term like this gamble. If there is ever a position that you absolutely want a bridge contract on it's a goaltender.
Have them put up 3-4 quality years. If it ends up costing you 2-3 more million in the long run so be it, but committing 7.25 million to a guy who if he ends up losing it will cripple a team.

7 is the new 5 and won’t cripple anything. That said, he’s too small for me.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 10:40 am If there is ever a position that you absolutely want a bridge contract on it's a goaltender.

Agreed, too many examples since the salary cap started that locking up a goalie to a long term contract can quickly be problematic. The only one I can think of that worked out pretty well is Carey Price, maybe Vasilevskiy's. Even Fleury's 7 year deal after a cup win ended up with him being the back up half of the time.BalotelliMassive wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 10:17 am Spencer Knight is going to get paid but I hope it's not long term like this gamble. Heck. Even Bobvorsky's contract has been a roller coaster and he has back to back cups.

Agree 100%! Wow, this is such a huge gamble for basically an unproven netminder.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 10:40 am If there is ever a position that you absolutely want a bridge contract on it's a goaltender.

Re: Dustin Wolf getting paid
It's a gamble but there's at least a degree of some sense to it.
The term is gross. And the term without play off experience is beyond gross.
Makes me feel good about where the Blues are...or with goalies...where they likely should be.

I remember more than a few folks squawking when the Blues signed Binner to his extension. Looking at it now, and what we're seeing with the Wolf signing, sure looks like it was a great move to lock him up. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20. Which is why these things are better left to the professionals.

He was a proven playoff goaltender when he signed an extension - even then a lot of people here constantly shiiiiii on him during the regular season.SRV1990 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 10:37 amI remember more than a few folks squawking when the Blues signed Binner to his extension. Wolf is completely unproven when it comes to the real season.

Binner didn't go from rookie to 6 million though.SRV1990 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 10:37 amI remember more than a few folks squawking when the Blues signed Binner to his extension. He went ELC, to bridge at 4.4, to long term at 6.
Re: Dustin Wolf getting paid
You're absolutely right! And folks still whaled on the Blues for the long-term deal they gave him. Imagine what this place would have done if the circumstances were the same then as Wolf's are nowTheJackBurton wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 10:42 amBinner didn't go from rookie to 6 million though.SRV1990 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 10:37 amI remember more than a few folks squawking when the Blues signed Binner to his extension. Re: Dustin Wolf getting paid
exactly and I would have likely done the same. Goalers are just way too up and down. I would want to see some consistency before committing long term money and dollars to them.SRV1990 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2025 10:47 amYou're absolutely right! A sub .900 goaler making above 6 million for 5 seasons just cripples a salary cap.
