Philip Broberg doesn't need a breakout season to impress with the St. Louis Blues
Solid, bordering on spectacular play is all Philip Broberg needs if he's gonna cut into either Colton Parayko's, Justin Faulk's, or Cam Fowler's ice time. While all three of them are great players, it's still tough to see them factoring too much into the Blues long-term plans.
If the Blues stumble outta the gate, then Broberg may see more ice time regardless of how he performs because Armstrong may orchestrate a fire sale. So, unless the Blues look like a lethal team this season and Broberg's play doesn't improve, look for something between 21:30 and 22:30 per game this season, especially if his playmaking ability sails north.
Also, if his points production stagnates, but he's making the same impact in three zones that he made last year, he's more than stating his case for more time. His advanced stats drive this point home, when he ended the year with a 93.7 on-ice save percentage at even strength, a 10.5 on-ice shooting percentage, and, overall, a plus-21 rating.

Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
Matthews didn't read my post in the other thread. This team is not headed for a fire sale.
Broberg will do what Broberg does. Could see him getting more PK.

on the other hand, don't be surprised if he doesn't. People giving him too much credit, maybe.

Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
I think after a lengthy offseason, contract year, 2nd full time season that Brobeg is going to take his play to another level. I think after this season people will be saying he’ms the teams top D or is right there in the conversation.

Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
why would he cut into any of the righty D players' ice time?

Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
Yeah. I interpreted that to mean which defender was drawing the most minutes, regardless. As long as Parayko can stand on his skates he's likely to draw the most. No harm in Broberg pushing Fowler, if that's possible. Big thing would be seeing more of Broberg playing well in all situations, but he needs to earn that ice time. I have no concerns, the top-4 is solid unless somebody blow a tire.
Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
I believe yours is the right interpretation of the article's theme...But hey, regardless of interpretation, the bottom line is our overall D is in better shape for the start of this season than it was at the start of last season. And I have confidence tha Broberg will do well.DawgDad wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 10:11 amYeah. I interpreted that to mean which defender was drawing the most minutes, regardless. Looking forward to how it all plays out.
Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
Exactly. What's more, Broberg averaged 20:30, Fowler 21:42. Broberg is 10 years younger, so that difference will shrink regardless of play.
Writer of articles loses a lot of credibility with "While [Parayko, Faulk and Fowler] are great players."
"Great"?!?!?!?
Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
yeah, great. lower case g. not sure what the issue is.
Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
Lost me at speculating about a "fire sale."
These people don't keep up very well.

Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
I think Broberg will be a top pair defender in a year or two. He is the same size as Petro but is much faster. He might be the fastest skater on the team. His skills are equal to Petro, but his hockey IQ is not quite as high. He is stunning to watch when he takes it end to end.
He will be the most exciting Defenseman on the team as long as he stays here.

What I saw last year was Broberg looked like a top line Dman and then the injury hit and he did not look the same after.TBone wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 08:58 am Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup

I was never convinced he was close to 100% post injury.
He needs to show he is the player we saw in the small sample size pre-injury and not the player after the injury.

Re: Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup
I think (hope) this year shows us what we can expect of Broberg movin forward. I realize Dmen usually dont peak till around 27 or so, but there’s so much untapped potential inside him that I feel like it’s just bursting at the seams and we’re going to be lucky witnesses to ten years of 50+ point seasons with +/-‘s of +15 and up, very good defense, and even a little snarl sometimes when the intensity ratchets up in the playoffs and tempers flare.Harry York 37 wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 11:48 am I think Broberg will be a top pair defender in a year or two. He'd have like 100+ points if he matched that performance for the year.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 11:58 amWhat I saw last year was Broberg looked like a top line Dman and then the injury hit and he did not look the same after.TBone wrote: ↑09 Sep 2025 08:58 am Don’t be surprised if Philip Broberg jumps past veterans in Blues lineup

I get what you are saying......although his post injury performance wasn't exactly shabby.
Give the player some time.
