Who is actually untouchable?
If you are like me, you think this rebuild will take 2-3 years minimum, at best. If you think they can compete right away, this post isn't for you.
But to me, there are nearly no untouchables in the Cardinals' entire organization right now. Because guys like Donovan, Nootbar, Gorman, Burleson, Walker and Liberatore will be on the verge of, or already hit their free agent years by the time the Cardinals are ready to compete again.
My thought get rid of all of them over the next couple of years and stock the system with assets. But who are the untouchables - the one's you want around in 3 years?
* Winn - Already a valuable player, when he becomes a solid above average hitter, he could be a 5-6 war player
* JJ Wealtherholt - For now. As he's our only hope for a true star to emerge from the system as a hitter.
* Victor Scott II ??? --- Odd player. He stinks offensively, but is so outstanding in centerfield and baserunning that he might lead the team this year in bWAR while hitting 35% below league average. If he becomes just an average hitter, he'd be insanely valuable.
* Pitching - Can't really think of anyone. Maybe someone in our system.
I see Winn and Weatherholt as the only untouchables. Everyone else seems expendable for the big picture.

Re: Who is actually untouchable?
On the pitching side, I wouldn’t trade Doyle. Probably not Mathew’s either. Anyone else is fair game.
Libby and Mcgreevy not untouchable but we can’t really create more holes in next years rotation right now so best not to trade the cost controlled pluggable guys. Even if they are back of the rotation guys.

Well since they have no one who can play at this level, what do you even mean by untouchable. They have nothing that could make a playoff team better, not one.Lloyd Braun wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 20:45 pm If you are like me, you think this rebuild will take 2-3 years minimum, at best. Re: Who is actually untouchable?
I’m not sure any player on this team is “ untouchable “ solely depends on the return, but there some players that I would put a high price on. The problem is the guys we need to move, won’t bring back much return. There are a few that could bring back players that could help, but they won’t be “ for sure “ type of players.
Re: Who is actually untouchable?
Nobody, now, or ever, is untouchable. Every player can be traded for the right return. Some players that's next to impossible to get of course.
It's hard for me to imagine getting a return where it makes sense to move Winn, JJW, or Doyle but there are absolutely players I'd trade them for.

Re: Who is actually untouchable?
Pallante and Walker are basically untouchable.......what team would want to even touch them?

Anyone should be available. Bloom should listen to any call on any player.
Re: Who is actually untouchable?
Yes, a GM should listen to any and all inquiries whether the player mentioned is one you don't anticipate trading. One never knows if a team would offer something sky high that you would consider. It's not like this team has WIlly Mays, Hank Aaron, or Stan Musial on the roster.JuanAgosto wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 21:26 pm Anyone should be available. Bloom should listen to any call on any player.

Re: Who is actually untouchable?
In my opinion, I wouldn't trade Winn or Wetherholt among the position players. Among the pitchers, I wouldn't trade Liberatore, McGreevy, Mathews, and Doyle. Anyone else is available if it moves the needle.

Re: Who is actually untouchable?
Victor Scott due to his extraordinary defensive play and his speed on the base paths. He may be the type of player that will improve his hitting in the future. I would like to add both Scott and Burleson as 2nd tier untouchable.Charles King wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 20:59 pm I keep Herrera, Winn, and Wetherholt

JJW
Doyle
Unless some team bowls C. Bloom over for them.
No one else is untouchable on the major league roster or in the minor league system.

None are untouchable but you still need to field a team.Lloyd Braun wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 20:45 pm If you are like me, you think this rebuild will take 2-3 years minimum, at best. If you think they can compete right away, this post isn't for you.
