Gray would have to waive his no-trade clause, and the Cardinals would need to eat at least half his salary to get anything resembling an actual prospect in return from the trade. The 2 most likely outcomes are Gray doesn’t waive his no-trade clause or he’s traded for what amounts to nothing so Dewitt can save as much money as possible and “invest the money in rebuilding the minor leagues and player development” (also known as pocketing the cash).

True that Atlanta and Cincinnati are closer to Gray’s home in Tennessee, but not much closer.

The latter (aka “pocketing the cash”) sounds like the usual DeWitt and Mozeliak modus operandi.
