Giants might be interested in Gray
The Giants might try to trade for Gray. DeWitt might be able to save money if Gray would waive his no trade. I would prefer that the Cardinals reinvest any savings with new players.

Who’s ready for 2026 season tickets?!?!That’s effectively a $40MM investment on a pitcher who is more projection than production over the past two years, and Slusser suggests that the Giants would likely only be willing to offer a meaningful return for Gray’s services if the Cardinals at a significant portion of his salary.

Would he even waive his no trade clause to go there? If he prefers the Midwest San Francisco ain’t it

Slusser does good work.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2025 23:26 pm Would he even waive his no trade clause to go there? If he prefers the Midwest San Francisco ain’t it
However that move would surprise me.
Gray is an interesting guy. Unpredictable, he should
the big park and the climate.
Re: Giants might be interested in Gray
There would be a price for Gray to waive his NTC. 1. His NTC would have to follow him. 2. He will insist that the team option for 2027 to be picked up. Unless those demands are met and it’s to a location that suits Gray, he’s not going to waive it.
Re: Giants might be interested in Gray
You don't think number 2 is the cost of number 1?
I have no idea what Sonny Gray wants.
I have little understanding how having his family in
Tennessee is much benefit for a guy on the road
a lot of the time but apparently he does.
Re: Giants might be interested in Gray
Not sure what you mean, but Gray has all the leverage. When Arenado was traded here, his NTC came with him, his option was picked up and an additional opt-out was added and he WANTED to be traded here

Interesting article. I'm guessing cardinals would have to pick up some or most of Gray's salary. Otherwise the giants could get a younger free agent for the same money.
Then what? Trade for a pitcher. Sign a pitcher. Fill the void with someone from the minors?

What good is saving more money in a year where we are already saving money?
Besides that, we would almost certainly have to spend SOME money to get another SP. We don't have 5 as-is.

San Fran is a long way from home, I have doubts he'd waive for a team that's no better than the Cardinals.
We know the return will be nothing more than a low level prospect, depending on how much money Dewitt picks up.
Unless Dewitt is willing to eat $15-20M and the return is a solid prospects, then I'd rather keep Gray than see the money go into Dewitt's pocket like all the 2024/2025 money did.

If Gray wants to stay close to his home in Tennessee
Then the braves or reds would be closer
Don't know if either would want him

It's almost worth it to keep him just to cover the innings. Who the he ll else is going to pitch for us in 2026.rockondlouie wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 08:20 am San Fran is a long way from home, I have doubts he'd waive for a team that's no better than the Cardinals.

As we saw yesterday he's still a well above starter, even at his age.imadangman wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 08:29 amIt's almost worth it to keep him just to cover the innings. If it was the Dodgers or Padres, then he might consider it.
But why would he waive to go thousands of miles from his family (we know very important to him) to a team that's no better than the Cards?

IMO, unless the Giants are willing to eat 80% of Gray’s contract AND give the Cardinals one of their top prospects the Cards should hang on to Gray.
He’s still their best pitcher.
Re: Giants might be interested in Gray
As earlier stated any move with Gray would surprise me for several reasons.Red7 wrote: ↑08 Sep 2025 06:35 amNot sure what you mean, but Gray has all the leverage. The point was he could have negotiated several ways and chose to add another $5
by an option when he already had an NTC. He could get that kind of money different
ways, deferrals for one. Trades are part of the business. If for whatever reason or
combination of reasons a better opportunity does come up that SG is intrigued by
maybe he does it and if he does it will cost a known amount.
