I don't mind the place....but their owner is a CLOWN!

Construction Woes....then why is the Hill or the Grove not having the same issues...?

Used to be a regular stop of ours after a night working at Harry's on Southwest. Didn't like how they treated Fred when his uncle passed. Never went back.

As for their current issues, when you go out of your way to alienate half of your potential customers (and in a not-so-nice way), you get what you get. As you said, other similar places very close to them are doing fine, so why isn't O'Connell's?

Have they tried taking carryout orders yet? Or are we supposed to feel sorry for them because they'd rather die than answer the phone?

No carryout orders - they refuse to change or accept any constructive criticism. This guy blamed Ameren for shutting him down when he missed a payment (probably more to the story)...

Still a great place, great food, fair price......same as it always was.

I hope some one can carry it on.

I never understood the allure of this place. Heard from many about the best burger in town!! when I moved here and it was ok. Add to that the place was a smoky craphole at the time I didn't hurry back.

Harry's - One of those "hole in the wall" places we used to hit in our regular lunch rotation - thirty years ago! In fairness it was a bit bigger scale than that. We spent a lot of time searching out and sampling restaurants in Soulard, Lafayette Square, etc., and we hit the more established joints, too. Memories.

I bartended at Harry's Bar & Grill full time right after college, from 1989-91, and then part time for about another nine years or so. There's a good chance I was working a time or two when you came in for lunch, specifically in those first couple years when I typically worked a couple lunches a week.
